LORD OF THE RINGS RULES THEM ALL!

LOTR was released on DVD in the States yesterday and of course I had to buy it and watch it again! One of my favorite series of all time (including The Hobbit and The Silmarillion) Two DVD’s chock full of goodies. They will be releasing a Director’s cut DVD November 12 with an additional 1/2 hour of new footage that will be incorporated back into the film. They are writing new musical scores for it as well. So it will be 3 1/2 hours long! I can’t wait for The Two Towers which should be playing in the next couple of months!

Frodo, Frodo, he’s our man,
If he can’t do it,
Nobody can!
Go Frodo!.. Go Frodo!.. Go Frodo!

i agree…LOTR is my new fave movie of all time…it is so artistically rich…I LOVE IT!!! i have to wait until thursday to buy it though :frowning:

I had to go and get it yesterday as well. Those teasers for the Director’s cut and the Two Towers are making the wait for both unbearable! 4 DVD’s! 3 months, then another month! AAARRRGH!

The battle scene generator they used looks amazing, from what little they showed of its use.

Oh yeah!

Did anyone find it odd that they show Gandalf in the previews for The Two Towers? Or do they just figure that the only people seeing the movie already know the story?

Hehehe My wife was confused about that as well Kaz! So I had to explain it to her. At least they didn’t give away the surprise concerning Merry and Pippin’s forest adventures…  I am eager to see how they handled the CGI and effects for that!

LOL Mentat, I’ve already watched the DVD three times since it came out! I love FOTR.

I also just finished my pre TwoTowers reading of LOTR, and now I’m reading the Sillmarellian for the first time-- good stuff.

I found Gandalf being there odd too Kaz. Ian McKellen basicaly said that people like Gandalf, and he’s a big character so…

Just got the DVD yesterday, and I absolutely agree … terrific movie adaptation of a terrific story!

Two things I do question about the movie-

(1) The description of Gollum, referred to him as a “creature” that had found the One ring. (Although they did show what looked like a human hand picking up the ring from the lake bottom.) I believe the book indicates that he was a man by the name of Smeagol, that found it when he was young, and the power of the ring transformed him into Gollum as we know him now???

(2) Can orcs really crawl around on the ceiling like insects??? Perhaps a bit TOO much artistic license here???

When he is refered to as creature I think it is very often preceded by ‘miserable’ implying that it is his state of being rather than physical conditon.

And the Orc were Velcro orcs  (not really!)

All said and done, an amazing film. Well done Wetta.

I think the wall crawling Orcs were added to emphasize the absolute hopelessness that the Fellowship had found itself in.

Actually, I think Gollum, when he was Smeagol, was a hobbit. Back in the Dark Years when the witch king (the Nazgul leader) was out killing people willynilly the hobbits were kind of scattered I think. Some of the Stoors settled by the river coming from the Misty Mountains. The weren’t like the Shire hobbits, for example they liked water. I’m not absolutely sure about all of that, but that’s the basic story.

Although I have read the “Lord of the Rings” at least two or three times, I am always amazed at the depth of detail, and find myself having forgotten so many things.

I admire the ability of writers, and other artists as well, to create worlds that are as “real” as the one in which we live.

Actually Muvlo I think that Gollum is referred to as being a member of a “hobbit-like” race and not necessarily a pure hobbit race. Been a while since I read the books but that seems to be what I recall.

Sorry this is long and probably too much info but here is what theonering.net has on Smeagol…(Even though they call him a Hobbit in this blurb, I think Mentat is right, he is from a race of which Hobbits came from…I think).

quote:
Biography: Smeagol’s original name was Trahald, the Anglicized equivalent of which is Smeagol. Smeagol was born in the year 2430 to a fairly prominent family of hobbits of the Stoor strain near the Gladden Fields. In the year 2463, the day of Smeagol’s coming of age, he went fishing with his cousin Deagol. While fishing, Deagol saw something glittering under the surface of the water, dove in after it, and came up with a glittering gold ring. Before even knowing the qualities of the beautiful ring, Smeagol’s desire to own it overtook him, and he murdered his cousin for it. Smeagol soon developed many undesirable qualities, like stealing, eavesdropping, and being sneaky whenever he had the opportunity. It was these qualities which got him banished from his household. Cursing his bad luck and his family, he eventually made his way to a gloomy den underneath the Misty Mountains. Living in darkness, he grew to hate the light of the sun and moon, but the moon he would tolerate. Smeagol stayed there for many years until he was unexpectedly visited by Bilbo
