Long time no wip... Skeletor.

That’s disturbingly great! :+1:

sweet model, just a couple things…
the bones need something to hold them there… they are just floating, also the colour of them is a little to clean, compare them with the teeth, and given theres blood everywhere else, maybe they could have a little splatter too?
that goes the same for the rest of his attire.
as for the texture, its pretty good… but the blood seems to flat, maybe if you could give it a little bit of volume?

Hexadecimator, just look at the beginning of the thread, its all there.

Yup, totally floating, it’s because there is missing geo. You can see it on previous pages, but it’s still in a state of design… so I excluded it. I’m thinking about more splatter, but I don’t want to be everywhere… we’ll see.

I want the blood to appear dried and old, so it might have to remain a bit flat. If you’ve ever seen dried blood, you’ll notice it doesn’t “pop” like fresh wet stuff.

So yeah, it’s still coming  lots of work left. Thanks for the input!

Getting even smellier

the one thing I would probably tweak is the coloring of his body/skin which together with the blood appears a little monochrome in colour. it looks like one tone of brownish red, in darker and lighter variations.
I don’t mind the blood being flat, because I assume it is already dried in and blood with volume anyway can get pretty cheesy. in my opinion the somewhat flat appeal really comes from the lack of variation in the overall colour tone.
I would maybe also darken his fingers and hands, toes and feet increasingly to add variation and pronunciation on one hand and give it the effect of an increased state of decay of the extremities. that might of course not at all be what you are envisioning for the guy.
either way, I really like the way he is finally turning out now.

it seems we just both synchronously commented on the dried blood look .

Awesome character. The only thing that bothers me are the textures. In going back and looking at your untextured posts the original sculpt looks a lot more detailed than the textured version. Which indicates, to me anyway, that the textures seem to be covering up the details rather than accentuating them.

Also I think I would watch how you approach the lighting. in this image I thought he just had a floating skull; but in your older posts i see that he actually has some pretty interesting stuff going on with his neck.

I agree about the textures doing their own thing with the details… it’s something that happens to one degree or another with all models and textures. I think it might primarily be the lighting. I’m working on some other approaches right now, these were area lights in Vray, and, well they’re not giving me the shading that I am after. I’m still working though

Thanks for taking you time to critique. It’s definitely stuff I need to address, and is in the works :+1:

so im the only one who hates the green skull ? ;f why isnt it ****e/yellow ? Its not liek his head is somehow 1000yo ;f

You might be. I haven’t taken a census. So, you think it should be yellower or whiter?

Skeletor is loosely based on The Grim reaper, AKA Death… who is far more than a 1000 yrs old… so I do want him to look aged. Severely aged.

the green is just fine. and it’s not really like it is screaming shrill green, now is it?

yes, but for someone thsi old hes in a pretty good form ;] Still i think the green comes out of nowhere and slaps me in teh eyes, skulls go more into brown colors when aged, unless there is already somthing growing on it ;g
And teh head schould be ligther than the body, if you wnat to saty with the green color at least dont make it so dark.

I’ll look into it.

just google some old skulls ;f If it wont look good with brownish one you cna alwways go back ;]

Thanks for the tip, I guess these 4k photos from the catacombs of Paris aren’t going to do.

ahhh, there we found the culprit and root of all the evil green. french skulls.

french skulls in particular when they are around 100 years old are of course green from absinthe. everybody knows that.

Interesting! Despite this ‘heavy-metal’ feel, have a look here (if not already)

I like the blood around, I don’t like the head (I simply don’t understand it as the whole dressing too), I think that a ‘simple’ bloody male nude is what you have in mind. A much more aggressive theme though.
Actually, I like the way you sculpt, Obz. Keep it this way :+1:

Thanks Michalis. I’m not sure if you guys had He-Man And The Masters of The Universe in Greece, but he is a basically a toy/cartoon villain from the 80’s. The same epoch as the Transformers and Atari, and other such things that todays 30-something North Americans will always be enamored with. So the dressing, I feel, is fairly close to the original concept, certainly derived, but true enough to be recognizable yet original in interpretation.
I wanted to stay somewhat true to the design, but giving my own twist. So the costume, or dressing as you call it, may not make total sense if you’re not familiar with the franchise.

I’m glad you like the sculpt. Hopefully the next iteration has a more aesthetically pleasing head for all.

Obz - as a teen during the early 80’s I rather like your interpretation. I am attempting the same thing with my project - a tribute to the original, but through my vision of what he might be like in a more “realistic” world.

Look forward to seeing the final renders:). :+1:
