just a thought

Isn’t it about time that all this nonsense about “congratulations for reaching X number of posts” be given a bit of a rest.?

I don’t want to get too controversial but it migh be worth thinking about.

It was bad enough when everyone started reaching 1000. Now it seems that we are going to have the same malarky everytime someone gets to 3 4 5 6 7 8 etc thousand posts. Pretty soon there will be the day when we have two or three a day.

Maybe we should have a congratulations to the first person who can spot another one thousand post winner and post a congratulations thread.

To the casual outside observer it must be starting to look a little incestuous and cliquey. And not a little strange.

I’m sure that pixologic didn’t intend it to continue on after the initial 1000 post mark. That was started by the users themselves.

What is really strange about it is that there is an implication that sheer numbers of postings actually mean something. When in the case of jelee for example a single post on a low poly eye study can start a revolution.

check out the saint at 134 or le discot or Ken B, quality over quantity. Also notice that these sort of theads are always started by those who have already got their stars rather than by the great unwashed.

Just a thought…grumble…mumble…moan…

I think the number of posts that some here show how active they are. It doesn’t mean they posted a 1000 images and recieved praise… they gave back to the forum. They take the time to help others. I’d say 99% of them deserve as much credit as we can give them.

I really don’t see how a congrat post is intrusive in our day.

Good grief. :frowning:

This is the third time today and in the recent previous days that I’ve felt uncomfortable being here at ZBC.

Think it’s time for a break from being here. No, I don’t believe in a bed of roses and everything should be hunky dory all the time…but criminy…

My personal opinion…this is a community…those that give back should be recognized…and a simple thread to acknowledge that seems a small thing. If it weren’t for those posting, what would ZBC be? And why not recognize them?

Are you saying that those who have many posts didn’t say anything valuable? Or not enough of value to be worth noting? Or are you saying that some peoples posts are more valuable than others? Of more value to whom?

Who is to judge that?

Forget it. In the scheme of things it doesn’t seem much to have a thread for congratulations and as a matter of fact there is a post for past one thousand by Aurick to drjjwow. Does he not represent Pixologic?

Tons more to say, but what’s the point?..I’ll be back another day when I feel better about being here.

No. I wasn’t saying that.

quote:
Or are you saying that some peoples posts are more valuable than others?

No I wasn’t saying that either. Although that is objectively a true statement but that is not what the thread was about. It wasn’t about measuring anyone up. It was simply that it creates a cliquey atmosphere that I don’t feel creates an ideal context. It was just my humble opinion.

I do understand your sentiments Vikki, I was perhaps trying to see it from an outsiders point of view. it wasn’t meant to be devastatingly important. Just something to toss around.

Because seriously if it goes on like this then in about a year there will be plenty of one stars and lots of two etc and there will come a point when there are a couple of them a day.

I thought the original idea where one gets a little interview and a welcome after one thousand posts was quite a good idea. But all these additional ones are superfluous.

I think we should all do what we want… let’s be spontanious! If someone wants to post those things, let 'em! And congrats the 1, 2, and 3 thousand post people!

I agree with Vikki in that recognition of 1000 posts is a good thing…and I also believe that this forum is very cliquey thats why I vary rarelly post any more and the only reason I visit is to see when version 1.5 is going to be released. There are only a few images that I view and those people are the ones that I dont feel are elitist’s. So for now I frequent other gallery’s and forums…I have know idea why I even stopped in this one ? I do feel sorry for the new people that join this forum, it is a good place to learn but it can make you very uncomfortable.

I agree with Vikki.

It should be noted, it should be celebrated (by those who CHOOSE to participate).

We shall never put a gun to someone’s head to celebrate. No one is FORCED to celebrate.

We could always celebrate the hundreds rather than the thousands… :stuck_out_tongue:

I also agree with the majority on this issue. Those congratulatory postings are rather clearly marked, and if one wishes not to be bothered with them, one just doesn’t click on them. They don’t come up automatically, you have to select them.

This forum, like many others, can be like a close family at times, with people expressing differing opinions and the occasional bickering can be a result. But the insipidity of a place where EVERYONE agreed on EVERYTHING would drive me up the wall and off a cliff. I like this forum the way it is.

I used to read every single posting here. But this forum has grown exponentially, and I just don’t have THAT kind of time lately. So I just have to choose which threads to read. Everyone has that same right.

I second Nikko my fellow Ohioian. I, like many others of you, have fealt the tension lately, but this forum still is the major reason why I purchased ZBrush. I hope that when the new version of ZB comes out that things will calm down a little with regards to the slight unrest we have been dealing with. I’m sure once we get 1.5 we will all be up to are knees in characters and cool stuff. Just to let you guys know I tend to understate everything.

I posted a facetious reply to this ‘topic’ earlier, and rightfully it was removed as it could have been mis-interpreted as an ‘attack’, but I thought, as one who just coincidentally reached the 3000 post mark today, why not comment…

I think, as others have said in the past, that this is a community. Sometimes there are conflicts in communities as there have been here in the past. But as a member of a community, I believe we should be supportive of each other, and we should also celebrate our accomplishments. I should note here that I have not posted 3000 pieces here, but I have commented, tried to help others, supported my fellow members, and welcomed new members to the Forum…

That’s how come I reached the number of posts I have…

I have all the time in the world to hang around the Forum. I’m self-employed as a worker in gemstones, I sell my ZBrush pieces from time to time, framed by me, and I have a full and happy life.

I personally feel no need to object to the congratulating of anyone here for any reason, and I don’t care if some hypothetical ‘outsider’ might feel that is ‘incestuous’ or indicative of a ‘clique’…

Frankly, I don’t give a husky ratz ass what this ‘outsider’ might think of the Forum. They can join in, or remain isolated…The choice is theirs. I like the people here in general, and I LOVE the software for the artistic freedom it gives me…Other agendas are unimportant to me, and I suspect, to most of the members here…

well said stone cutter i agree with ya.
and congratulations stone cutter once again i hope the topic didn’t make you feal out of place.

Deleted by me, Brian.

Perish the thought! A couple a day! Egads! Ruination!

No, I couldn’t stay away for a whole day. After thinking about this…I love ZBrush and ZBC too much to let a few ruin it for me. I’ll just have to learn to ignore the irritants better.

Hanuman, seriously, I respect your opinion and you’ve helped me more than once, but come on, a couple of posts a day?

As one of the great unwashed, well I basque in my unwashedness and strive for the day that I know enough to be able to help as many as these washed have, thereby increasing my numbers as to receive a well deserved accollade for the time and effort I have contributed. Will it mean I’m smarter than anyone else? Nope. The whole of the effect will be to give me a little recognition for the giving of my time, knowledge and energy and a giant thrill. Of course, this all hinges on that fact that I learn enough to be able to actually teach someone something.

I’m only human and I have to say that receiving a “Well Done!” still makes me quiver with pride. But as much as I enjoy that, I also enjoy giving someone else the thumbs up. It is another human side of us. Do a good deed and it is returned a hundred fold. I also enjoy, yes enjoy, the constructive criticism. It expands our horizons and helps us to grow. Negativity does not. I’ve lost a whole day on negativity. What a waste. :frowning:

When you have a loved one or a good friend you don’t one time in your relationship say “I love you” or “You’re a good friend” and then forget it. You reinforce that over a lifetime of continued support and friendship. That’s human nature. We all need it. We all strive for it.

This type of discussion could go on for volumes and volumes and everything could never be completely said so, I’ll say this;

“This last week or so has been an extreme learning experience for me and I’ll not bow to the negativity of some at my own expense.”

So if you choose to be negative, sorry, it doesn’t fit in my world. Please don’t confuse negative with constructive and I in no way can figure out how this thread is constructive in any way.

In conclusion, ZBC for me is a great learning experience. It broadens my otherwise narrow horizons and it is a place that I enjoy immensely(sp?). That includes the constructive criticism, the positive feedback and the general overall good attitude of most of those here. So, I’ll not respond to negativity in any form ever again. It is detrimental to the overall feeling of good will and a hindrance to personal growth.

Well said, Vikki…Here’s a :+1: for you right now, for the thought! In a way though the thread may not have been that constructive, it has become so in terms of reinforcing my belief in the great people here…

I never, in all my wildest dreams, think that by starting a thread to Congratulate a friend who has helped me since I joined the forum on July 9th 2001 would cause such confusion. At present I have 2959 posts and should reach 3000 in the not too distant future. Has this got anything to do with the genesis of this thread? think about it. As some one who is a little older than most members, I can read between the lines. I do not know who said it but I use this phrase a lot.“Many a truth is said in jest”
