How to mask in bands?

I saw a video tutorial once where the guy created masks that went in regular bands, from end to the other. I’m using 4R4 now, and I can’t find the option I was using before. (Sadly, its been a while, and I don’t remember what it was).

I can use CTRL to manually create bands, but they aren’t even.

Any help is appreciated.

Not entirely sure what you mean…

But if you hold CTRL outside of the mesh it will make a rectangular marquee?

Yeah, sorry, its difficult to explain.

Say I create a cylinder. I want to then create masks at regular intervals that go around the cylinder in bands. I think the option I used to use before had something to do with “x,y,z,” if that makes any sense. I used this to quickly create space ship parts with the deformation tools.

I figured it out, finally.

What I was looking for was “Mask by Alpha” and then "row, “Col,” etc.

Thanks!

Are you talking about doing this when it is still a primitive? Before it has been turned itno a poly mesh? Like in the video for making a tri-part brush of a ribbed tube?

It doesn’t have to be ‘Mask by Alpha’ necessarily. It will work on any portion that is masked. You can mask the whole subtool or just a portion of it.

edit: OK, I see what you meant by “Mask By Alpha”. You meant the UI Group. I have “Use UI Groups” turned off in Preferences. I thought you meant the “Mask By Alpha” button.

Thanks for the help, guys. Yes, I was thinking of using deformations on a primitive, before its turned into a 3D mesh. I had forgotten that it would only work before it was converted, and about the “col,” “row” options.

The new insert brush makes it so easy to combine several meshes into one. It’s great.

Double-post.
