Harryhausen Cyclops Wip

I’m sure when God was handing out the talent you got all of my share too by mistake LOL!

This is simply stunning and really brings back so many great childhood memories of those stop motion movies when men were men (in sandals) and women had perfect make up even when they were being chased by Greek Mythological Beasties. Top stuff mate!

Turned out great!

Ray’s designs were so damn strong they hold up even by today’s standards from a design stand point. I really enjoyed his production art book he put out last year, I like the fact it shows is pure imagination before budget, time and technological barriers got in the way. Inspiring book.

I wanted to do the Hydra but work and the Flu got in the way:cry: While I was planning to do it (I still will I will just miss the challenge) I was torn like you. Do I do a replica or a spiced up homage?

From a pure sci fi geek stand point, you could not go wrong with Baker doing his Harryhausen impersonation!

BTW- saw sci fi boys the other day, damn that brought back memories. Oh and those Norbert make ups are simply fantastic! Watching the behind the scenes on that really brought back memories, mostly the memory of the smell ammonia fumes

Really nice work Rick!
Greg

Looking more than a little fine, Rick; a worthy tribute indeed

Other than the superb Pan-like ‘leg-hair’ treatment you’ve given this guy,
his hand/wrist poses are what really ‘do it’ for me! Great Stuff :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Chris

One of my favorite movies :+1:

Perfect - cant wait to see it textured.

monstermaker, you’ve done an incredible job here. your models are always just fantastic! if you have a minute (ha) would you care to quickly explain your process of bringing your displacements into modo?

This monster piece is done really well  hehe just a little hairy at the bottom with nothing to show. But it looks awesomeee

Hi guys, here is the first color map test.Painted in ZB.Since this render I have worked a lot more on the color and bump maps but ,i think I will save that render for the contest.
Ron ,No worries man,Yah I was thinking about 3d printing this guy.
aminuts ,yah I would love to animate him as well but I don’t think it’s going to happen as I modeled him in this pose and before I exported him into ZB I froze the subpatch model in Modo which like quadrupled the poly count.
tictok, are you talking about the Harry Maq that I sculpted ? how did you see that ?do I know you?
50’s I was thinking that it would make a nice garage kit
pixelrangler,thanks have you seen Norbit?
hyper1, 7th Voyage was the same for me I was like 8 when I saw it and fell in love with it especially the cyclops
Mr Monster hey buddy
MINTy, thanks
hey Greg, sorry you got the flu I would have loved to see your Hydra
artwooki, thanks man
Blane, thanks sorry that you didn’t contact me when you were in LA
industripop, Well the simple version is, I export a displacement map using displacement exporter which is flipped vertically open up as an image map in the render tree in Modo set it to displacement and change the low value to -100% and that is about it.
patsiu, it’s hidden in the hair ,but you don’t want to get him excited. cyclopscolorlargecomp1stt.jpg

Very nice! He looks like a toy too! I really like how the legs turned out too, the hair reminds me of Greek statues

I remember reading a book about HarryHausen’s Artwork. His storyboards were extremely detailed and rendered out fully.

You have areas of new standards - congrats - it’s ace :+1:

VERY cool. I want this guy on my desk! Thanks for responding to my Modo question Monstermaker. I’ll give that a try!

That looks Awesome! Great Job:+1: :+1:

I love it! If you 3D print this guy, please post a picture of the printing here. Would love to see how it turns out as a real sculpture. I’m happy you go for the original proportions. Really cool stuff :+1:

-Kris

No less than spectacular, Rick, just missing the seemline! 50.

I am impressed. Sweet work, oh my…

Great digital garage kit! Some parts really look as if they had been dry-brushed.

That looks great!

I love the colors that you chose. Has a great cartoony feel.

It already looks like a painted model so I’m sure the real thing will turn out well.

It looks like a real figure,
nice job! :+1:

Thanks guys. Since it looks like I will get the cyclops done on time I started a quick BG late thisafternoon. This ia a quick ZB render of it’s beginningcybgtest.jpg

That is so awesome! God I love those movies!

Funny thing is, when I had the honor of spending time with Mr. Harryhausen we talked about you for a little while…In my best Ray Harryhausen voice “Rick told me that when he was a kid he used to run around and act the ymir…He sure makes the best gorrillas, wonderful scuplter” I told him I still run around and act like the ymir! He spoke very fondly of you and your work.

I love this thread!

Looking good!

Greg

Oh, I was hoping for a scene. :+1: 50.
