George Bush

Wow- I don’t think anything I have ever done has got such a strong reaction- not because of the technique I used but just because of the subject matter. I wanted to create a picture that did not outwardly bash or praise the subject. It would be too easy to add demon horns or put him in a god like pose with light rays decending down. I wanted to put this one more in the middle of the road. Its was not my intent to display to any political views- its just an illustration. (that that comment in my original post was just a joke)

I have always had a hard time capturing a likeness- and feel i need more practice. i did most of the work in painter -I used zbrush to sculpt the head and suit body. I still want to try to do some of the texture in zbrush before i take it to painter (in my next project). but its just a matter of how fast i can create it without getting bogged down in the process.

Atwooki- cool- you worked on that splitting image stuff- now those were some good caricatures.

Thanks for the comments-

Surely we have the right to sculpt and look at pictures of aliens and large breasted women without be reminded of politcs or human rights abuses going on out side the confines of our comfort zones!Maybe people should put warnings like they do for ‘nudity’ or ‘violence’ so that we can protect ourselves from exposure from other peoples opinions! WARNING this post may contain IDEAS!

Blimey - what a lot of fuss.

Now as I remember there have been countless images of George Bush posted on this forum - none of which have raised such issues.

Perhaps the most controversial point here is, it doesn’t actually look like George Bush. You kinda sorta know who it’s meant to be but I’m afraid it’s close but no cigar.

That said, it’s a fine painting post and a great attempt.

I’m sure as your use of ZBrush grows the 3D elements/involvement will be less tenuous than at present.

Come on boozy floozie…with those blood shot eyes from all the booze? It’s him, I can even almost see his tail from here…it’s a young party bush… :stuck_out_tongue:

FridayEve: The Flooze said what I was going to say. I knew it was Bush the second I saw him, but it still misses the essence of him. I really dig the painting style you have though…

As for what you can change to achive “Maximum Bushness”, I’m not the person to ask, as I’ve never been trained in characature work… My only suggestions are to make the eyes a bit smaller. It will add the smarm factor that really defines the Bush personality. Oh and maybe 25% more chimp…

I say don’t be discouraged at our comments. You do have a real talent there…:+1:

(A hell of a lot better than mine for characature)

Dickie

Great image! I’d love to see some in-progress pics to see where Zbrush ends and your other tools begin.

For my money though, he needs to look a bit more chimp-like

I miss the dollarsigns in his eyes and a sign which says ‘will kill for oil’

Good job sculpting !

thanks Dickie- yeah i think the smaller eyes could help the picture. Even the distortion caused by the perspecticve could contribute to the change in the character reading corectly. thanks for your constructive comments. Since this kind of stuff is new to me i have a lot of room to improve. It’s easy to create a character no one has seen before (warrior, old man, elf, orc, monster) but its a whole new challenge when what you make has to look like a specific person. (becuase its either right or wrong) While doing this kind of work is not my end goal. I do feel this kind of excersice does help me to learn facial structure and what makes one person diffentent from another. A skill set that i have ignored for far too long- as a result most of my characters all looked the same. practice practice practice…

Heya Steve,

I know exactly what you are talking about when designing characters and having them all look similar… I’ve been forcing myself to go in different directions when making new ones. I find it REALLY hard to do that and try and keep what makes my style mine.

I went to your homepage. I LOVE your illustrations… I wish I had that talent when it comes to illustrating. The savage girl eating the rat is a nice little character. Good stuff…:+1:

I played around with your original Bush image in PS using only the liquify brush. I had a blast and it was a learning experience for me. It illustrates the points I metioned earlier better than words. If you would like me to post it in this thread, I shall.

It was not made to offend you or imply that your work is in any way sub-par. It was an exercise for me in characature that came out pretty well.

Dickie

Omgz, it’s the “demon”! Thats about as funny as watching a beheading video or a suicide bomber in israel.

Of course this is going to provoke reactions, for many different reasons and opinions. I agree with Blaine and responses like the one quoted above is exactly what he meant, I think… Why would you want to add “will kill for oil” unless you wanted to provoke hate mongering, bickering, etc…

This is a worldwide community with varying opinions, if you don’t respect that, then don’t worry about trying to be neutral in your responses but don’t expect respect in return either. :td:

No offense to the original poster, It’s great work for that art style, looks like him before 9/11 when he had just became president, since then he rarely smiles, his hair is grey and he looks older than his own father.

Oh and on a kind of related note, Artwookie, I had no idea you worked on Spitting Images… How cool! I was always inspired by thier designs.

Here’s a quickie Zombie Ronald Reagan I made last year that was DEFINATELY influenced by The Spitting Images characters…He doesn’t look like the Spitting Image version of Reagan, but you can see the influence…

And sorry for the thread-jack Steve, but it's kind of fits the theme here...:o

I didn’t even think to use the PS liquid filter-what a good idea. i modified the face by reducing the nose and eye size and tweaking the mouth shape. I do feel it does look better- (not a homerun) but better.

Steve,

He’s definately getting there. The smaller eyes help to tag him as Bush. The changes are fairly subtle, though. I found that when I exxagerate the features a lot, the subject is more instantly recognizable. Of course I don’t get paid for my characture work, so again, take any of my advice witha grain of salt…

Oh and my 25% more chimp comment before is slightly off the mark. When I was playing I found that if you mix him with Alfred E. Neuman, the Mad magazine mascot, it works a LOT better. It’s funny, but political cartoonists have been comparing him to Alfred and now that I’ve played with George a bit, i see why…

Do you wish to see the mods I made to the original? It illustrates the points I’m trying to make here better than my words…

Dickie

A really nice painterly style.
the eyes are too big (not beady enough) and he looks like about 15 years younger.

But I really like the texture, lighting and composition.

Did you paint the brush strokes in Zbrush? Love to know your step-by-step.

Yeah-dickie i would like to see it- could you email it to me- shoeking(At)hotmail.com

 thanks

You got it, Bro…On her way…

Dickie

here is the mesh I used in the paiting.

I wish i saved some of the steps-

Excellent!
I’m curious how you use this 3d base to paint on it…

5 stars for sure!:+1:

Little things make a big difference. Great improvement:+1: I can’t say that I can see anything you could now change that would do anything but detract from your style. I look forward to your future posts.

Forgive me for my prior posts. A shot of the news and way to much coffee makes me a bad boy:o :o :o

If you are interested have a play with this thing I have just knocked up. I am not saying it is the definitive G Bush… but it could give you some ideas. This was modelled straight from memory and is not as good as it could be. The tool included here needs to be subdivided twice.
