deer anatomy

Very nice!

Cheers,
Josh

not a fan of that floor fading off like that, still love the model  Looking forward to the new stuff!

I have to agree about the floor, I think it’s detracting from your presentation, as is the wood block. Personally I think it would be nice to place them on an “island” of grass, branches and leaves - the kind of underbrush they would be surrounded by in a forest. That’s more modeling of course, but it would look good.

One last thing I’d suggest is tweaking the pose of the deer in the background. The problems are with the legs, namely:

  1. Both the fore and hind leg of the left side of the body are off the ground - this is very unlikely to happen.
  2. The weight distribution of the fore-body is “floaty” - that is, the weight should be firmly on the right forelimb, since the left fore-limb isn’t baring any weight, but instead the fore-body feels like it’s floating somewhere in the middle. Fixing this will probably require something like positioning the right fore-limb more centrally beneath the chest, tilting the ribcage and left scapula slightly down toward the deer’s left, which will cause the right scapula to appear to be pressing upward.
  3. Having said that, actually I think you should place the left-fore-hoof on the ground, with the right hoof a bit further back (left and right sides crisscrossing each other if seen from the side). I believe that would give you a more natural looking pose.
  4. The left hind-hoof would look more natural if it were bent backward a little at the ankle/knuckle.

Of course it already looks good. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with it next.

thanks all 3!

ye! i’m looking into that background. might just do a simple grey-ish plane. i’m still liking the base, so i won’t be doing anything to that.
francis: thanks for the pose crit… jeez, i’ve been looking at it for so long, and did not notice that. sure gonna fix it.

here’s a new render. fixed a bit of everything. pose, color, light and shading.
i hope that i now can leave it and hit the render button.

looking forward to hear what you think.

beautiful! nice study and render. love to see any more anatomy studies you do

Nice but, Fur please, so the muscles aren’t as defined. I’ve seen lots in real life.

@ Doug Jones. This sculpt is an ecorche - meaning that showing the muscles is a specific intent of the exercise.

Regarding Presentation:

Both background and block are improved, but:

  1. personally I really don’t like the yellow shader on the dear. I think the white looked really nice (other options may work just as well)
  2. Though the block is improved I think the “blockiness” of it is disrupting your presentation. An oval base like this: PresentationBase01Oval_01.jpg (OBJ in zip file: ) would work better in my opinion, or a textured base like: http://th08.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/i/2010/120/b/2/__Eel_Walker___finished__1_by_MarkNewman.jpg OR http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs15/i/2008/356/d/e/__Iris_in_bloom___by_MarkNewman.jpg
  3. Clipping the base as you currently do creates some discomfort for me in the composition.
  4. The deer seem a tad crowded on the current base
  5. Posing still needs work (sorry, I’m probably starting to sound like a broken record): The front and back legs are now communicating different states of action. The back says he’s moving, while the front are firmly stationary. Off-setting the front legs so that they are clearly not parallel (moving the right leg much further back for example) would suggest a sort of pause mid-stride. Of course you’d need to experiment with it, and I’d suggest closely studying as many photos of real dear as you can for idea’s on how to create a really believable pose. In your experimenting I’d consider lowering the left hind hoof so that it’s not so high off the ground.

SammehSAMURAI: thanks a lot man. ye! it’s been fun to do, but my next thing will be something completely different. but i’ll sure do more like this in the future.

Doug Jones: no fur on this one… it’s a ecorche, so it’s supposed to look this way.

Francis Bezooyen: thanks for keep giving good crits. the base i won’t touch, because i like it as it is. simple. about the colors, ye! i might tweak it a little, make a bit more pale again. when i see it on a different machine it looks to saturated. so perhaps something in between.
i’ll have another look at the pose and the camera.

Absolutely love your work…such subtle sculpting…a rare thing :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

thanks a lot for the kind words.
here is a new take on “final”… hahah
this time, i’m sure it will be kept that way aswell.

looking really nice I would be interested to see your render approach

one crit though I would get a bit of a subtle reflection on the base with it being a flat black colour it is really standing out and distracts from the actual sculpt. Really great work though

I think you should give them a fiber finish! They are outstanding studies. I would love to see what they might look like with fur.

Much improved all-round. Good work:)

Do you think we’ll ever get to see a rotation of them?

love it  i like the subtle rim-light, the darker base, the nice material  congrats, it turned out really great! now it only needs to be printed

Awesome deers Rasmus! I agree with malc2304 the black box really steels the attention.

i kinda liked the wooden base better to be honest. makes the subject look more natural

FYI - I think some people’s comments about the base being too dark may be due to differences in monitor calibration. My monitors at home are not calibration synced. On one of them the base looks just fine, while on another it does indeed look too dark. Your best option short of actually calibrating your monitor might be to look at the render on a variety of monitors (friends, work …) and find a happy medium if you can.

-well i guess this is another “final”… heheh
i tweaked the base after seeing it on a different monitor.

malc2304: thanks a lot. i tweaked the base. hope it shows better now. i also posted a pict of my maya scene setup. -it’s nothing fancy, i guess. i’m pretty new to v-ray, so i’m sure there is plenty of room for improvements. i hope it’s useful, to you anyway.

Captain Cartesian: thanks. glad you think so. -sorry to say, there’s not gonna be any fur on this…

Francis Bezooyen: heheeh… thanks for all the good crits. glad you like it. and ye, there’s surely something about the monitor calibrations too. but i fixed the base, and i think it’s better now. -so all good.
i’ll render a turntable of it, for sure.

dandan: thank you so much. -ye, printing would be cool.
really looking forward for your next sculpt.

-Storm-: thanks frederik. your new characters looks fantastic.

FrederikP: thanks. -it’s back, only darker now… hehe

hope you’ll like it.

I was checking your artwork, great stuff!
the Deer echorche is my favorite.
