Can I ask a question?

Well of course I can.

The real question is, will anyone answer.

I have been thinking about this in the last month or so and it came up again with someone tonight.

How many of you, start with a vision for an image and remain true to it? I mean, is it normal to deviate from the original vision of an image or are you able to start with a vision and see it through to the end exactly as you envisioned it without any discrepancies? Any tips on that process?

Well Vikki, as far as my own process, I don’t even start a project until I have a clear vision in my mind of what I intend…
Then I know what I have to do to produce that vision, and I take as much time as it requires until I see in front of me what I set out to do…
But in my case, that comes from my work as a gemcutter…If your material is worth $5000.00 per gram you better have a plan!

But on the other hand, I paint in the real world that way too…The only place I just ā€˜wing it’ is when I’m playing, and I don’t save those…

Since you asked…When I do get a chance to work on a project these days, I generally get stuck on an idea and have to see it through before I can start on a new piece. I’m not sure it is the best way to work, because it doesn’t leave room to experiment and play with new ideas. However, I know if I didn’t work this way, I would never complete anything,…abandoning projects as soon as the going got tough. As for the idea being the same from start to finish…I find projects take on a life and a direction of their own.

I wish I could do what I plan… I start with a plan… rarely what I end up with is anything close. Sometimes it’s like a sculpture I’ve heard some say the figure is already in the stone and they just bring it out. (Well I’m not saying I really bring anything good) but I’m struggling along trying to bring out what I was thinking, then suddenly I see something else completly. ~L~

Still striving to get what I want. Maybe someday.

I have to say that the vast majority of the time, I ā€œjust playā€ and don’t use a plan. But sometimes I get an idea for a ā€œreal imageā€ and draw it out first (I always do this when painting). But the key is time. I have very old projects left mostly unfinished. They may never be done, but I do know that if I finish them, they will look as intended to look by me.

Thanks for your input. It’s very helpful.

Hmm, it’s looking to be a variety of techniques.

I asked because although I have a definite image and theme in mind, it seems Z takes over sometimes(or my lack of Z-Skills and artistry skills) and I end up with sometimes something much different than what I started with in my vision. I still have my theme and it still works but like I said, sometimes it is much, much, different.

Now, if I could draw it might be a different story. Only reason I can make something that resembles anything is because of Z. Before that if vector graphics would not have been invented I’d of been sunk.
