Some tips - You could simple tune your weight/raduis for your shader to match more like below pic. Yours needs alot more scattering going on.

Also pretty sure you have incorrectly done your back scatter setup, only under strong back lights your going see that effect showing through.
Helps to paint back scatter weight instead, but doesn’t hurt to have color plugged in there also, just the effects are minimal with your lighting.

that is pretty damn awesome. could you go into more specifics about how you set up your render scene for mental ray? i am trying to learn how to use mental ray so any info would be great!
