Article re: sculpture

Brief article about how one man’s computer sculptures were received by “real” sculpters.

cute read.

NP, great story! I could relate to the writer’s frustration in a very big way. The ending was funny, and deserved! I’ve got artist friends that will absolutely NOT acknowledge anything done on computers as ART. Shallow-minded people.

Hey, I’m a ‘real’ sculptor, (spelling, guys… ), and anybody who wants to do computer sculpting is doing real art in my opinion…
That being said, it is a hell of a lot harder to do it in the ‘real world’…
It still does not justify the irrational attitude of the art snobs…

I concur with SC 100%. I am a sculptor in the real world and have been doing so for over 50 Years. I have not put any special amount of time to do so on the computer, because I was not impressed with the type of images I saw when I began. If you gave one of these expert computer sculptors a bit of stone and asked them to sculpt it how would they make out? just a question. Which form of art is better :ex:

IMHO, that’s kind of like asking which is better: watercolors or oils? Sculpture or pencil? Pottery or jewelry? Each is equally valid, with its own unique set of advantages and challenges.

The best form of art for YOU is the one that best allows you to achieve your particular vision, or the one that you have the most fun with. In the end, that’s all that really matters.

Anyway, speaking of sculpture, those figures that were made out of “Sculpey” that you see in the “Art Of Attack Of The Clones” book looked really sweet. :+1:

Aurick makes a great point…Art is Art.
In fact, the 40+ years of stonecarving I’ve done has contributed a great deal to my grasp of computer modelling. The same skills transfer easily, in much the same way as traditional painting skills contribute to computer painting…

Matthew I agree with you to a degree. Speaking personally now, I do not sculpt in ZBrush because I find I do not have the freedom to do exactly what I want, this may be unfamiliarity with the program or some other reason. Give me a bit of stone or coral amd I am comfortable. I wish I could feel the same freedom when trying to sculpt in ZBrush or any other graphics program for that matter. So I have more fun playing with ZBrush, as modeling in stone or coral is more like work, but I am better at it.
