As far as i remember I took that matcap material on this board long time ago, but sorry, i dont remember from where or the author, i apologize for not being able to give proper credits .I tweaked it a little at some point because of some minor differences in render between 3.1 and 3.5 R3 , anyhow for anybody who might be interested it

Regarding my character pipeline , it really depends on the structure of the character itself . If it`s just one solid mesh or made of a few elements i tend to block it in zbrush through zspheres and then do retopology later. In most cases i use base meshes from 3d studio max with decent topology and i rely on zbrush only for the hires sculpting. But whatever the approach i chose there is always a considerable back and forth between max and zbrush at any stage of the modeling process.
Anyhow here `s a few more production models with huge zbrush contribution i had the chance to work on, Threshermaw for Mass Effect 2 cinematic and chicken for Fable 3 :
