Activation Troubleshooting for ZBrush 3.5R2 Windows

Yes, and we’re working on a fix.

You do not need to fill in the license information to create a Support account. Only the system info is required. After you have submitted a ticket and gotten the license info that you need you can then log back into Support and update your account with the license info.

Wow, I cant believe I didn’t notice that. I’m going to have to blame it on a lack of sleep. Anyways, thanks for the help.

For some reason I can’t find your activation request. Could you resubmit it, just to be sure?

I resubmit the info and the new activation key was succesfully recognized!
Thanks

Hi,
Has a fix become available yet for WinXPx64 users to get the activation to continue to work after a different user to the local admin has actiavted the software?
Mike

A fix is being worked on. When it’s released there will be an announcement here at ZBC as well as in the Support news.

:(Thank you for the tips for the activation and also on the troubleshooting of the keys. I have got the lot of helpfull information on activation of the keys from this forum.

How’s that fix coming along? It would be nice to load up the new release here at school…the natives are getting restless!

I’m totally lost on this. After following the instructions given, I now have two directories in my program folders, one called ZBrush3 and one called ZBrush3.5R2. I ran the ZBrush.exe in the 3.5R2 folder, it walked me though an activation process, and at the end of it I was apparently running 3.5.

What’s supposed to happen now? Am I supposed to go into ZBrush from the 3.5R2 folder or the original ZBrush3 folder? Neither of them will take me back into ZBrush - the one in the original folder just hangs, the one in the 3.5R2 folder just tries (and fails) to reactivate again.

Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit, tried running direct, Run as Administrator and running in compatiability mode.

After installing and activating R2, you run it by running the executable in the ZBrush 3.5R2 folder. You can also create a desktop shortcut to that executable.

ZBrush 3.5 should NOT be run in compatibility mode. The only thing that should be active on the Compatibility tab is the run as administrator setting.

If you continue to have difficulties, please submit a support ticket.

We are currently using zbrush 3.1 and did not have to give students Administrative priveledges in order to use it, as a matter of fact softimage, 3dsmax, maya, photoshop and not one of the other programs we run require administrator access. I am in a lab environment with students ranging in ages, Administrative access is not an option as im sure it would result in a disaster, Should we forget looking into purchasing the upgrade or is there a fix for this, if not why would you require admin access to run an application like zbrush?

Anyway please let me know so i can stop the purchase order if i need to.
Thanks,
JS

Run as Administrator is NOT the same as giving an account admin privileges/turning the user account into an administrator. The Run as Administrator setting can only be assigned by an admin, and only affects the specific program for which the setting has been enabled. It does NOT give user accounts permission to do anything that you wouldn’t want them to do. All that this setting does is give ZBrush itself permission to write to its own folder and subfolders. This is a requirement with Vista and Windows 7 for programs that do that rather than writing to the user profile. Enabling this setting for a specific trustred program like ZBrush by right-clicking on that program and going to Properties>Compatibility will not open the computer up to security risks.

We run windows XP here w/sp3, and the run as tab is only temporary at least from what i know about it, it allows you to run a program as an administrator but when the program is shut down and restarted you would have to do it again, maybe they changed the reset attribute in WINDOWS 7 and Vista unfortunatly we are in XP, i cant go to each machine everytime a student starts Zbrush and log them on as an administrator, then stop class when it crashes and relog them on as an administrator, that just wont work. Perhaps there is something about the Run As option i dont remember from my MCSE. Am i wrong about the Run As checkbox in XP, Anyway just trying to do the pre-problem solving as permissions seem to be the biggest problem i have read.

Thanks again for the quick response,
JS

Run as Administrator only applies to Vista or 7. For XP, the user needs to have Read/Write/Modify permission for the ZBrush folder and subfolders. With version 3.1 you also need to give this permission to the All Users\Shared Documents folder.

Alternatively, install while logged in as an admin, but do not activate. Then log in as a regular user and launch ZBrush to activate it. 3.1 will inherit the permissions from the account that is used to activate. If first launched and activated while logged in as an admin, then only admins can run it. If logged in as a user, then all users and admins can run it. If you do this, then only rare exceptions require manually setting permissions.

PS: Why are you posting your 3.1 activation issues in a thread for ZBrush 3.5? You should be submitting a Support ticket. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks Aurick for the insights, but my question was/is not about 3.1 it was about 3.5 and upgrading to it and all of the issues that i have seen people having with permissions, 3.1 was only mentioned as i dont remeber having to set the permissions to Admin, however you answered that with the last reply because im sure that i activated as the student account. Again thanks for the replies i guess we will hold off on upgrading.

Thanks again,

Hi, I am also having troubles activating ZB 3.5R2 on my Desktop Vista 32Bit.
( First time user and buyer )
It does not have internet connection, so I followed instructions sent an email off for the activation code via my laptop XP expecting the 7 day activate later.
When I found I could not use ZB my eagerness took over and I installed the software onto my very weak laptop and activated it via web.
The serial code was emailed and I now have access to ZB via my laptop.
Unfortunately I can not get the activation code / ZB working through my desktop, just doesn’t want to read that ZActivation file.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers Laticis

Activation codes are unique to each computer, and cannot be used on any other computer. The activation code can only be used once as well.

Hi Aurick,

Thanks…I thought that might be the case. I have resolved my issue since then.
Bit the bullet and hooked my very slow internet connection up to my PC.
No problems at all with the activation, been happily playing away.
Very impressed…lots of fun and learing to be had in the coming days and years ahead.

Best of wishes for the festive season everyone.
Merry Christmas.

Cheers Ady / Laticis
