A SAD SAD DAY.............SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA IS LOST DURING RE-ENTRY

I turned on CNN this morning only to see the destruction of the Space Shuttle Columbia as it re-entered our atmosphere and began landing maneuvers. It looks as if all on board were lost. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

A terrible tradegy. :frowning:

On behalf of Canada, I would like to express the sadness we feel as well in the face of this tragedy, and deep condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives…

I was at college this morning when a classmate told us about this. We went to MSNBC.com immediately and when we saw the visual, my heart fell through the floor. It brought back sad, sad memories of the Challenger disaster. I wanted to cry. What a tragic loss. Seven heroic lives lost. :frowning:

I was stuck to the TV most of the morning! It is indeed a very sad day. It would be bad at any time but at this time is devastating for the U.S.A. in particular, and the whole world in general.
Our sincere condolences.
DeeVee,
Joe.

I too have been glued to the tv. The space program is near and dear to my heart. My heart goes out to the familes. They died living out their dreams, but also all of us dreamers.

I must say Bush’s words were very good. I’m not religious, but his words "they didn’t make it back to earth, but we can hope they made it home’ was beautiful.

let’s not overdo it with grief, but yes, it was a very sad story.
although it doesn’t even come close to the irony of Das Boot, where so many people were saved from war at sea and died just as they landed on land.

and also it’s not half as tragic as the people murdered every day in big cities such as Chicago or Tokyo, or the drama of people whose countries are being bombed or are about to be bombed, or the oppressed women whose clitorises are amputated in Kabul, or the twin towers tragedy.

And the words of the president, no matter how much he felt them -and I genuinely believe he did, he’s a simple person- were naturally written by expert counsellors.

In my effort to be fair, I know I am sounding ā€œunemotionalā€ to many people, but it’s exactly the opposite. I’m so emotional that I think of the many tragedies of the world and society quite often, and certainly when a new tragedy comes along. I don’t live in a protected, peaceful dream-world. I live in the real planet Earth, and this means that without being cynical, I see that some tragedies are not as striking as the rest. I feel the need to say that perhaps we are over-reacting a bit, and not even of our own volition, for the media are certainly enjoying themselves immensely - I too have been keeping an eye on CNN all day.

my sympathy and condolences to those who need them, including the brave families of those people, whose grief I can only begin to imagine, even having lost kin myself.

goodnight

We are reminded today of just how deadly ā€œreaching for the starsā€ can be. Our future in space is being paid for with the lives of these intrepid and courageous people. And yet it seems true that these days it’s more dangerous down here on the surface than up there in zero atmosphere.

Sweet dreams to explorers everywhere.

It’s terrible, very very sad.
I’m a greate fan of the Space Shuttle
this is very sad…

yes, it is a sad story, but i also do agree with cneofotistos, many murders are committed way more horrible than this, and nobody hears of them, or cares of them. yet another day of tragedy for America

I don’t think the value of tragedies should be compared. What of the tragedies of entire African tribes wiping each other from the face of the planet, people in the Middle East killing each other for the sake of their beliefs, the Roman conquests, the genocide of the Nazis during World War II? ANY WAR is a tragedy, but to the family that’s lost ANY loved one for ANY reason, whether it be a murder or a traffic accident, NOTHING could be a WORSE tragedy relative to them.

At least this was an accidental tragedy, not an intentional one like a stupid frigging WAR! It really shouldn’t be a point of comparison.

I heard this while listening to the radio and must say the tagging on of the phrase ā€œterrorist activity is not suspectedā€ is a sad reflection of the state of the world at present.
It doesn’t seem like accidents happen anymore.
My condolences to the families of those who were tragically lost.

I agree with you my friends !! Its a sad day. :frowning: :frowning:
My heart is with their families.

D’ont forget that more more life are lost since the space experiment have started!!

My thought goes to all those people, and I thanks them for the footsteps that they have allowed to do the humanity in this sense.
