A punk character for a demo reel

Outstanding work. This is one of the best human characters I’ve seen. If his a punk maybe some scars or tattoos will help. Though he looks awesome already. Keep it coming!

when I saw the first image on the second page I thought u were working on King tut… loooooook its almost the same then I saw the second image lol

really nice, only crit might be to tweak the ye direction to either look into the camra or a little further away, it’s kinda stuck inbetween. Only other thing is the pants seem to specular for denim and too matt for leather. I’m really look’n for tiny things now though

I think this should have been on the top row yesterday! Amazing stuff, you’ve got the whole package. My only crit is that I liked all the other angles of the pose more. The hair looks really great too. Can you show some wires of the meshes and untextured hair?

its very rare I post on here but I just had to say this is a great piece of work and I just love the style. Looking forward to the updates

Inverse catheter - thanks man!

brettSinclair - thank you. I think you have a point, i ll try to come up with something for a tatoo for him and perhaps give gim a few scars on the head.

(v)olotov - haha, man it does look pretty close! This image and some others that i just saw on here made me realize what i need to fix to improve my own btw, so thanks!

mphilip - thanks a lot!. I ll try it out with the eyes - i am really not happy with their look right now (it’s not so obvious on a long shot but they look worse the closer i zoom in). As for the pants, those are supposed to be jeans and yeah, you’re right the spec is off. I would need to work more on that and his belt, and the metal bits too.

j lizzle - thank you, i m flattered. Image isn’t really finished though. What i m doing right now is just trying to get shading and lighting to work.
I m doing this guy for an animation where all angles are going to be displayed, as well as for an illustration - for which i would probably choose a different angle or maybe even repose him slightly. I won’t be showing all angles here rendered until this is finished and is in animation - that way there’d still be some surprizes left.

I ll post some wires of the base meshes with the next update. Currently my scene consists of mid/high rez models from zbrush - it allows for pretty quick render times while keeping things simple(minimal displacing) and maintaing same levels of detail.

bradjames - thank you, i really appreciate it!

wow…its really nice…im waiting for your Demo Reel…

OOOOH That’s wicked! I’m loving the character - great texturing

I REALLY want to see the software render with hair.

GREAT work friend.

Thanks guys!

Another update. I should probably begin calling this guy “Street Kid”, rather than Punk, as it seems more fitting.

I ve tweaked the shader for skin a bit, with the most work going into colour correcting/repainting the colour texture, regenerating/repainting normal and spec maps. Now i am using only one spec map to do all spec related things and normal map has more detail and is easier to tweak. Regeneration was also due to me tweaking the geometry in zbrush, where i added slightly more detail to the face, changed the proportions and shapes somewhat. I also added a rather strong light from the top left, eyes were isolated and given their own lights for reflection/highlights. Their textures were also tweaked. I repainted eyelashes to use only 2 planes per eye (top/bottom) instead of many , like I had before. Result is more realistic and cheaper shadow casting, with more control. Right now i am working on hair. Possible other tweaks that i m considering right now are tweaking the highlights in the eyes, tuning some of the detail down, tweaking lights/shadows and doing the beard. Last one is a "maybe" right now because i m getting tired with this character and i would probably need to repaint beard to use fewer planes.

Also i m probably not going to give him a tatoo just yet, as i m growing rather weary with this character (i mean, there is nothing really special about him, yet i ve been working on him on/off for almost a year now).

So, yeah, this is just the top part, lower is still unchanged.

Thats the wire/hair screen grabs.

Let me know what you think!

Your Street Kid looks like a full grown man. He looks like he is in his late 20’s early 30’s.
I think if you tone down the wrinkles in the eyes, around the brow and the mouth that would help.
I think a dead kennedys jacket would help too.

Fluxist8070: - Thanks for your feedback! I toned down the ammount of detail for the face slightly. I was going for a bit older man with the model, but renders make him look a bit youngish, not that i mind terribly though. I could probably colour correct the skin tone if i really wanted to.

I ll refrain from big design alterations for the reel right now, but i might consider doing it for illustration. Thing is that i don’t want to cover up the anatomical part of the model, which is largely the purpose of this character.

Update:

This is a pretty much final version of the character. I ve made some minor tweaks to the face, most noticable probably being the added tear duct wetness planes, that make eyes look a bit better in close ups.

Hair was rearranged a bit and had specular and bump maps applied to its shader. Also all the clothing and accessories got a spec map and some minor shader tweaks. Oh, and i also faded the colour splotches on his jeans a bit.

Next I would be preparing him for rendering, while thinking about the type of background i m going to use, if any, and what type of grounding he is going to get.

There’d still probably be minor tweaks, depending on feedback, and if I spot something thats off.

I would probably be using the lighting in the left image for the entire animation, but the right one looked cool, if a bit flat so i decided to show it as it was.

Next update that i d post here would be either a link to a demo reel or/and an illustration. For the illustration I m considering modeling the background elements rather than using a photgraph/mattepainting to keep the style similar. I could always do a bit of a paintover in post production stage.

Comments, suggestions and critique are welcome!

good modeling on the head and torso. the skin shading looks great and the hair looks perfect i think(just needs to have a little more gravity on it though, right now it looks like its on hair spray).

only major crit is that the fingers too skinny and weak, and the over all anatomy of the hands need more work.

Thanks fx81. I ll try to fix fingers, i think reducing translucency would help a bit. I agree about anatomy, next model would be better in that regard.

As for the hair i doubt i d be able to help it much, at least i don’t see how. Thats the issue with using alphas in this manner, hair is lacking volume. I was thinking of painting it over a bit for the illustration though. On the other hand, don’t punks use hair spray anyways?

I understand that you want to show off the anatomy, which, don’t get me wrong…it is really nice. The shading and texturing is tight. However, this is no longer an anatomy study. It is a character with very academic anatomy. My point is that you have character. It may be i the best interest of your demo reel to show that you are able to do your research and come up with a legit interpretation of that particular characterization through research and implementation of that research. (can you tell i teach for a living?) Of course nailing anatomy is important and you are pretty good at it. But consider this, your character concept is pretty refreshing because it is not some sci-fi, alien, spaceship sypical model. It has a uniqueness of concept. Anybody with zbrush, a base mesh and an anatomy book can make a convincing figure study. Fewer still are those that can breathe life into a character that has been concepted. Think of the last comment about the hair–most of the ols school punk kids would dye their hair with peroxide or even kool-aid which would make the hair dry and less susceptible to gravity. Instead of hair spray, real old school punk kids would use elmers glue. (dont ask me how I know all this stuff. : ) ) So, it may be a good idea to do some research on punk culture. Most art people are into lpunk anyway. I think it is a great figure and a great character. I am simply urghing you to push the concept as far as it can go. Oh, and give the boots more room at the heel. Its looking good over all though. Top shelf!

great character!

for the lighting, as you said the right image looks flat. i recommend the left one.

Ouch ! it hurts !

Wow, amazing work!! *****

matte3d - thank you!

gpepper - hehe, it shouldn’t - maybe your monitor is acting up?

turx - thanks!

Fluxist8070 - thanks for taking the time to write that huge comment! I wish i thought of that (and some other things) when i started this character, he would ve probably been much better, and i wouldn’t have spent as much time either.

Originally, this character (3rd and last on my reel) was meant to be an “interesting normality”, as i already had completely original concept and “tribute” models. So i was modeling him from a guy on 3d.sk, which should be pretty familliar to anyone who visits there. Unfortunately i don’t think i am allowed to post the reference, but i ll find that out for sure - maybe i can.

The guy in the reference doesn’t look much like a punk either, though his friend (i assume) there, seemed more like one (he also had a jacket). So i just automatically called the project “Punk character” rather than “Street kid”, or what-not.

The old plan was not to make him really original, but to copy him straight, so people could recognise him. That didn’t really work, as he turned out too plain - so i remodeled the top to push the character a bit. I made him older. Unfortunately i didn’t really stick to any one single reference for the face, which i guess i should have, but oh well…live and learn.

Right now i am pretty short on time as far as finishing demo-reel and getting a job goes - so i am thinking of sending stuff out as it becomes presentable. Especially since every consequitive model that i ve made was a visible improvement on the predcessor, i m hoping to establish a pattern, which would be neat.

You ve convinced me to push the character further and make him more punk-like, which i think would be pretty cool. I d give him a jacket, maybe pose somewhat differently, redesign piercings and maybe even add a tatoo showing under the sleeve. I was also thinking about giving him socks. But it would have to be for illustartion though, which i could add to the next version of the demo reel, as well as do a breakdown and camera moves, etc.

Hi, for those who might be subscribed to this thread, the character is finished and in a demo reel, which you could see here:
