3D programs and tehir Purposes

Soooo in some sense I don’t think pirate stuff is tooooo bad as long as you buy the program in the end.

And how do you know if you’re going to buy it or not, if you’re using the warez copy as a trial version? That’s a bad excuse.

yuriythebest, what you’re missing is that piracy isn’t an action… it’s a way of life, or a habit. That’s not the case with someone who purchases pirate software unknowingly. People who pirate software don’t do it because they can’t get their hands on a trial version. They do it because they’re greedy, and because they know they can get something without having to pay for it. People tell me all the time that when they can afford it they’ll buy the pirated program they use every day. I’ve seen them get the cash, and I’ve seen them do nothing about buying the program they told me they would. Instead, they spend the cash on other things they can’t as easily steal.

You’re right in that if you’re not in the US it’s unlikely you’ll get busted for having pirate software. But, many, many businesses are getting done for using pirate software these days (all around the world) and I think people who form a habit of pirating things put themselves into a dangerous frame of mind. Don’t believe me? No worries… it’s not my problem.

I used to pirate everything I wanted, but for moral reasons I stopped. Most people are morally deficient, so for them I simply say- if you do it, you’re a real dummy for doing so. Besides, it’s not like people need software to survive. If you can’t get a bit of software, just do without it. When you can afford it, buy programs and support the developers who worked hard to bring it to you.

That’s a lame justification. If you don’t have much money, use cheaper, or even free software. Or, don’t use anything at all. The world is hardly going to end if you don’t use a costly program. No doubt you’ll say the same about pirating software too, but at least I don’t have to come up with an excuse as to why it’s ‘okay’ to use what rightfully isn’t mine.

However for the 99% of people who live in the developing world and are not rich or american, it’s in my view completly ok to use pirated software for educational purposes.

I’m not rich, or American (?). I just save my money for a long time. I’m also a student (with a student’s amount of money in hand), yet I put what I have towards good software because I want that to be my living one day.

…though not in an insane way like saving money for a year to buy a single piece of software and then not having money for the hardware to run it on or anything else.

If you’re not that dedicated then you use your brain and buy the software that’s in your price range. Unless you’re running a business, you don’t need Maya Unlimited, XSI Advanced or the latest Adobe collection (keeping in mind there are learning editions, as well as academic pricing schemes for these kinds of things anyway). What you can do with Blender these days is almost limitless, so there isn’t even the excuse you need a costly program to make decent renders or models. It’s just not true. Heck, I purchased Ulead’s PhotoImpact instead of Photoshop (for a fraction of the price) and worked on a paid project for 8 months with it. It did stellar. Carrara 5 is cheap as chips these days, and can render up a storm.

It’s called- quit making excuses and start thinking like an intelligent artist. Of course, as I said, pirating things (or thinking that’s a good idea) is your problem at the end of the day, but sheesh… I really wish people would stop offering up excuses to steal software, just because they aren’t smart enough to get by without program A or B.

Think about it.

Side note: no personal offence here, I’m just a passionate guy.

none taken  I applaud your strong moral values

note: by issuing that statement I in no way imply of using illegal software of any kind myself and am not subject to banning and/or legal prosecution.

Software piracy is bad news. ZBrushCentral has zero tolerance on this subject. Anyone who is found to be using a pirated copy of ANY software (ZBrush or otherwise), or who in any way advocates software piracy will be banned.

Good stuff. I really enjoyed this thread. I’m in the same boat as the original poster looking for a program to work on a movie project with a friend of mine. I haven’t purchased Zbrush yet but I’m saving my pennies. I’m on a mac so I’m probably going to wait until the native version comes out.
