ceratopsian dinosaur

Hello All

This is a painting I’ve been working on far too long. Everytime I’d start again work would suddenly get busy. When I had a spare day to myself I finally just sat down and finished it. I could nitpick at it forever but I just have to call it finished. I think I’ve lost all objectivity on this one!

The dinosaurs are called Albertaceratops. Their skin patterns are based on amazing new skin impressions of a related dinosaur. I gave the male elongated spine on his flank, something that may actually have been there!

The pose is based on watching some hippos interact. Hippos sometimes rest their heads on each other because they either get tired holding up such a head without the help of water or because they like each other. The environment is a cattail marsh at sundown. A special thanks to paleontologist Scott Hartman for helping me with the eppoccipital horn arrangements.

I modelled the dinosaurs in ZBrush, lit them in Vue and finished the painting in Photoshop.

I hope this does not come across too dark, I did it on a Cintiq.
