Default chris-carter's Sketchbook

Hi all, decided to start a sketchbook out here, as I find myself doing more sculpts.

I just completed this sculpt for school back in May. It's based of course on Andrew Cawrse's well known reference sculpt. I'd like to revisit this one day and clean it up some. Maybe I'll do a better job making the muscle fibers read more naturally, for one thing.

But of course, I'm always interested in your thoughts.

Default Bull sculpt for school

Here is the other project for that class, the quadruped project. I chose a bull because almost everyone else (it seemed) had chosen to model a horse. I try to keep things original when I can.

I want to go back and rework this one as well. Maybe later...

One more thing...this was meant to be a steer, as it lacks the necessary equipment to be called a bull.

The bull looks ok. Couldnt hurt to put some more defining details to break up the back a bit.

The human sculpt looks good. Did you use one of those figurine anatomy models as reference? The muscles and proportions look pretty accurate.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, I was using Andrew Cawrse's Human Anatomy Male v3 from Freedom-of-Teach as the reference for that one.

Hi Again,

Here's a little freelance project I finished back in December. The client wanted very specific features and design elements and wanted them placed just so, using his choice of font and so forth (as clients often do http://www.zbrushcentral.com/newrep...ote=1&p=620211#). I had a little more wiggle room in fleshing out the animals, but that was mainly it.

It came out OK, but I put it here in the sketchbook because it mostly served as a training ground for me in terms of projection techniques in ZB. I learned quite a lot too.

I prefer at least anatomical believability, though the client wanted essentially a duck bill on a goose. So the one used for the projection was the duckish one. It's narrower to aid the projection, which worked pretty well. The more proportionate version seen here was my initial concept.

I won't pretend that the koi is any sort of true to nature anything. But it's pretty on the coin.

Fire away! Cheers.

Can you please share your workflow for projecting the models onto the coin?
I do coins at work on occasion, and I'd love to be able to use zbrush, rather than vectors.

Thanks in advance

Sure. There are several ways to go about this and I used them all at some point. One which I like a lot is to create the model, and then capture it to an alpha, after which you can tweak the depth values embedded in the alpha to get a better effect. So Alpha > Grab Doc.

Another way is to take say the goose model, place it on the coin, and then use the ZProject Brush, which takes a bit more prep and finesse.

The last way that I know of is to use the Project All Subtools approach, where you set the elements of the coin up into subtools, place your coin as a subtool above those and then Subtool > Project All, and also harness some of the snazzy new Projection settings that came out with ZB 3.5.

As a cautionary note, things like undercuts and more complex depth issues don't always project, for obvious reasons, so plan around that. Also, it can pay to focus on projecting the broader forms and then add detail to the coin itself. (but isn't that always the case?)

Another thing you can do is use Projection Master to drop the coin with non-normalized deformation turned on. Draw the model that will be applied to the coin, but with a very low Z Intensity value. This will flatten it relative to the camera while keeping the details, and you can move it around at will -- even rotate it and watch the results on the flattening effect.

Once positioned right, leave Edit mode and use PM to pick the coin up again.

Thx Aurick! I'll have to give that a go.
