The Artists in Action Series Presents Zack Petroc, Art Director of Unit 11
Zack Petroc presents his philosophy of character design, and demonstrates the choices that an artist make while refining form and establishing character. Using examples from motion picture work he demonstrates how easy it is to fall into certain ambiguities, then then proceeds to show better choices can be made that truly convey the character's personality. Along the way, he shows how ZBrush can be used to quickly and easily make changes to the design while still remaining completely within the digital medium. We hope you enjoy this series and look forward to bringing you many more artists and their workflows for ZBrush 2! Nice to see Zack, it's always more fun to see ideas from beginning to end. I like the solution sketch/character, can't wait for the feature. One of my favorites!

I did pay close attention at the siggraph lecture
here are some examples of ambiguity ![]() ![]() ![]() these are from different movies..but they are so similar its hard to really see the diffrence. from a character creators perspective one seems to inform the other to such an extent that they could all be from the same film. another thing was the limitations of hw/sw and how that dictated the form and design of the past..limitations software hardware based lead to design limitations..emerging and trying to wrestle control back from the descisions of the past; are design based solutions where the artist (or producer) sets the tone not the machines limitations..yaaayyy the fact you mentioned this stuff ![]() was a nice touch steve Last edited by steventaylor : 10-14-06 at 01:53 PM. |

That was great, but I get the feeling there was a lot more to that lecture!
