    Post chimps (updated with step-by-step)

Here is my second attempt at a 2d painting in Zbrush. Since i was already familiar with the subject, i thought i would try doing another piece of monkeys, this time in color. This one took a whole lot longer than my first piece which can be seen here. Just like most traditional painting, color seems to take longer. Each hair was an individual stroke, so as you can see it got kind of tedious. But after all of those billions of hairs, i am very pleased with the result. I will be posting a walkthrough a little later, so check back later.
Comments, tips, and feedback always welcome!

Here is a little step-by-step of how i did this piece. this is just one way to work, but there are many others. i am still trying to figure out what works best for me. there is no right or wrong way to work.

first block in the basic shapes and colors with a large brush at a low intensity
refine the baisc shapes and colors with a smaller higher intensity brush. Don't worry about getting the exact lines you want, just keep it rough
use the smudge tool and the blur brush with various alphas to start bringing things together
work in some detail on a section of the piece with a smaller brush (i started on the upper right)
while working in the detail, use the various tools (highlighter brush, blur/sharpen brush, contrast brush, and smudge tool) to enhance the picture
continue to work in the rest of the detail zooming in and out
add textures by using various alphas and changing the settings in the stroke pallet (i used the colorspray stroke for the skin)
add finishing touches with the highlighter and very small brushes

hope this helps! let me know if you have any questions.

    Nice work, Artboy...
(On the other hand, as a traditional painter myself, you don't have to clean brushes, or flush out your airbrush either... )

thanks everyone! yes stonecutter, i am really getting hooked on digital painting. for those reasons. i especially like the no cleanup part! also the ability to save your work along the way at as many stages as you want is another huge advantage! oh and your are correct frenchy, it is completely 2d painting from scratch.

I posted a 2D painting on Kokoro's 'Prinncess' thread you might want to check out...It uses a little different approach, which involves modelling, to get the light and shadow, and then overpainting the resultant render...
If you check out the thread, you can see the render K sent, and the painting I did using it. The beauty of this approach is that you can model to whatever extent you need, even a rough model will work, and it sets the lighting for your painting for you...

You might find this an interesting experiment to try...

thanks stonecutter, yes i have been watching that thread as well. I am curious of how exactly you did the painting. did you import it as a texture and fill that canvas? or are you still working with painting on top of the 3d pixols?

This was painted straight onto a JPG that Kokoro sent me...It is basically the one she posted on the thread...
Also, as I said there, I added no colours, I merely used the ones she had on the JPG...
Filling the canvas works fine...(And also, if you use anything other than 'flat color' material, you can use the lighting to change the look...)
