    Default whaleofatale sketchbook

Started with sculptris a couple of weeks ago. I love the program.

Below are some sketches that I've done for some game concept art for a group I'm working with.
Chuck is the main character in a game called Extinction FIST that I'm working on with some friends.

Then some sculpts of re-imagined Oz characters for an upcoming game project of mine.

The Tin Woodman, Emperor of the Winkies. I thought that he should look more regal than the former metallic Nick Chopper, hence the tin finery.

And finally, not related to any game concepts, is a jogger girl. This was an experiment working with the stylized female base mesh I sculpted, and then using a plane to create the hair.

I saw the childhood challenge on the old sculptris thread. Sculpt your favorite childhood character. After much debate, and some consultation with my wife, I thought it would be fun to sculpt Punky Brewster. For all you children of the '80s, you know who she is. For the younger set, there's google and youtube.

This is a work in progress still. I have finished all of the broad details for mirror sculpting, and now I'm moving into the asymmetrical details.

A question on posing. Is it better to take the model into, say, Blender and rig it, pose it, and then finish up the painting and sculpting? Any advice is helpful.

    Hey Whale

You have some very good basic sculpts here. To me they almost all seem unfinished like some of my stuff.. Too much in a hurry to get to the next idea because Sculptris is so fun to play with
Your finished models are breathtaking to me. Tik Tok and the Tin Man look fully realized. Thats very tight sculpting. Are you retopping them? Those 2 are rocking

Thanks Tartan. There's a lot I still don't know about sculpting. I don't have $ for zbrush. Is there another program (free) that I can use to re-topo?

A lot of this stuff is concept work for the games I'm working on. I really enjoy playing around with Sculptris. The spinosaurus is still a work in progress. You can see some of the work at the demo site:

The program you need has a very steep learning curve but its a damn good one named Blender. Just look it up on the net. For retopping the man to talk to inhabits this particular thread http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=94019 Sean goes from Sculptris to Blender which can retopo and did a tutorial in it. I dont know much about it because I have other programs for that type of work. But I Do know its an extremely powerful program and it would be well worth the time invested to learn it. Cool site

    @Tartan
Thanks for the link to the tutorial. That is going to come in handy as I transfer these concept works to playable characters. That's still a little ways off, but it helps to practice.

Some more shots of a work in progress. This one is from a historical series I'm working on. This is Molly Pitcher. She was a heroine in the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Monmouth, to be specific.
The day was described as the "hottest day ever." Molly was fetching water for the soldiers when her husband, a cannon rammer, fell from heat exhaustion. It took four soldiers to work a cannon. They were going to retire the cannon from the battle. She took over for her fallen husband and kept the cannon going all day long.
The British Army retreated during the night, giving a strategic victory to the American soldiers. When General George Washington heard of her courage, he gave her a battlefield commission, and she was given the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Molly Pitcher is a folk hero of the Revolution.

This project still has a ways to go. I just wanted to get some critiques. In the finished project she will be standing in front of a cannon and be holding a rammer.
