    Question Merging Layers trouble

Ok, I had 2 layers that looked fine on top of each other, but when I merged the upper layer down into the lower layer, I lost parts of my image on the upper layer. Why doesn't merging retain the view of the layers as they were before I merged them? Also, it was a catastrophic action, because I was not allowed to undo it. Basically, it ruined my image and I had to start over from scratch.

Pixolator, could we get an undo capability for merge layers and any other layer actions that may put us in the unable to undo state?

    Thanks.

Ooooooooo. Now that would be some serious coding! I can only imagine what would have to be written to deal with the stackmemory to store the premerge event....

Sorry to hear about your file lose, I hate that!

Can someone also get me an "unsend" button on my Outlook, cause that could have REALLY saved my butt!

    How's your Zday going CDE?

It's a rainy day in FL today, so I'm kneedeep in ZBrush.

No beach today huh Kathy? Well, at least ZBrush is there to save the day. Clearwater, FL is that by Tampa?

Yup. I live on the Clearwater side (on the Bay) I can see St Pete and Tampa. TIA is about 15 minutes away.

We moved from Peoria, IL about a year and half ago.

What you experienced CD is the objects in each of your layers were at different values of z-Depth, so when you merged them some of the image was lost behind the other. I very seldom have a need to merge a layer but when I do, I pay close attention to where everything is.

(hmmm after rereading your problem I will say I don't know you would think that behind/before orientation is already fixed since they are in layers and visible. Something must happen thou when zbrush encounters 2 layers with material at the same depth (since what you see on the surface has depth also) I expect that it has to pick one or the other to be in front.)

To safeguard against mistakes I recommend

Save Doc before you do anything drastic
    or
First Clone the layers you are working with so that you will have a copy if things go wrong.

Digits has already replied with the correct information I will add just one more item…

Before merging layers, make sure that ZAdd is pressed.
ZAdd mode will instruct ZBrush to keep the Pixols that are closer to you and discard the Pixols that are further away from you. If ZSub is pressed, you will get the opposite result.

Kathy: "unsend" button (with an optional “resend” button) would indeed be a nice addition to outlook

    Pix,
As far as the buttons for Outlook. Maybe the additional event code could be renegotiated with 3 levels of popup windows saying things like,
    "are you sure?"
    "are you REALLY SURE?"
"Kathy(user profile name), damnit, you did this last time and regretted it, ARE YOU SURE!?"

And a backup option to erase the recipients brain if the message did indeed already get delivered.
