If you click on the video while it is playing it will bring up Youtube. If you view it from youtube it is twice as big, so you can see things more clearly.

I didn't know you could embed youtube videos on this site. Looks good. UV master should save you a lot of time in your pipeline

    Default Bow Opinion

I would like to get some feedback on the two Bow versions. One is basic, the other has added straps and feathers. Please let me know what version looks best.

BEAUTIFUL BOW design..I like the lightness/weight of it. Elegant curves, flow, and rhythm..
I made a bow one time in real life..not as beautifu as yours, but it worked great.. ..I even decorated it with feathers as you have done, ..but I had to take the ones that were on the top of the grip off, because they interfered with my line of vision while aiming at the target..
I left the botton bunch of feathers at the base/bottom of the grip on it though..they added to the flow of the piece, especally when the wind ran through them...I even had a couple of feathers tied and dangling from the very bottom of the bow..just to add to it's feeling of lightness/weight...light as a feather kind of feeling...Had them so they weren't actually touching the bow, but were attched with a piece of leather strand/string, so that they could dangle and blow/flutter in the wind as I held the bow up and aimed my arrow at the target...Just passing on some thoughts to you..That bow of yours sparked some good memories I had of what went into creating a bow that was personalized, and more than just a funtional piece of hunting eqipment...Don't know if my thoughts will be of any use to you, but thought them worth mentioning anyway..

    cherub_rock - Thank you.

Gary Komar - I have to agree with you. It is the exact reason that I decided to post both versions and ask for opinions. I thought it covered a bit too much of the bows design as well. Thank you for your input.

SpiritDreamer - Thanks so much for the kind words, and taking the time to elaborate on your thoughts. That's awesome you actually made a real bow! What material was it made of? Fiberglass or a wood? I used to have an old school bow made of fiberglass that was tons of fun to play with in the back yard .

As for your thoughts on the placement and everything, I would agree about the sight being blocked. I think I will remove some of the feathers, and possibly place them at the ends/tips attached to a string like you mentioned. This could definitely be a nice accent or detail to add in when I get around to animating this guy.

I am going to give it another pass today and make some adjustments. I will post back what I come up with. Thanks again to everyone for the feedback and kind words.

Aberrant...I made that bow from the branch of an ASH tree...It has a tight even running grain, and bends in the high winds we get around here where I live, instead of snapping and breaking as the other trees do...It's that flexible bending quality that makes it just right to make a bow from it.
I looked for a YEW tree which would have been even better, but couldn't find one..so the ASH tree had to do..It worked great, had alot of strength and produced a huge amount of trust..I used to shoot those arrows the lenght of a football field with it..and it never cracked or broke..a great bow..
Light as a feather, and stings like a bee...

I made some more small updates. I am finalizing everything to my satisfaction and then texturing and rendering. Comments and critiques welcome.

    Default UV Master Test-Run

    Thumb.jpg

I gave UV master a shot and put it to the test against 30 sub-tools. I have to say it did very well, and only a few issues / bugs. I was able to find a work around for them thankfully, but not without lots of time trying to pinpoint the problem. So below are my results, as you can see they are very evenly distributed and I tried my best to put seams in good places.

Your work is very good. Interesting costume design, cool character.
To comment on the UV Master test. Yes, it looks mostly very even. The only place I see texture stretching is on the back of the hood, and I'm seeing a lot of it there.

Thanks Wildsketch, I will go over that particular sub-tool again and see what I can do. I noticed it as well but I was in a hurry to get it all UV'd. If I were to compare it to having to map it in other apps like 3DS max, it is definitely faster, but I would say not by a lot. There is usually some work / fine tuning needed to put the seams in the correct places. However there were times where it was as simple as one click of a button, others were trial and error for a few min, but in the end the fastest UV solution I have used.
