I started working on Avatar 3 years ago and was working with Zbrush 2 ( that means no subtools!!) I had to work on a fairly slow laptop so that I could work directly with Jim Cameron on the mocap stage.
I was really green as a 3D artist but jumped in with both feet, after all this time I still really love the stuff we produced at Stan Winston Studio / Legacy effects.

I was part of the group of artists that Designed the Na'vi characters I was responsible for working out Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) Digital sculpts with expressions as a proof of concept for the look of the Na'vi people. I also did the designs for Norm (Joel Moore) as well as the Grace ( Sigourney Weaver}.
We also designed the Viper wolfs from a sketch of Camerons.
And fleshed out and detailed the head of the Banshee and figured out how it would function, that was a Neville Page design

Here are some of the Images that I did for the film Hope you like them, It was a long while ago, it's amazing how far CG has come from way back when these were done.

Patton your work is amazing! I'm trying to learn zbrush myself and would love to make a custom Na'vi of myself based on Sam Eye-Chin project 880. Is there any chance you've released the model(s) so their available to download for person use? I'd love to have a crack at it! Sadly i'm no way near making something as good as this yet, modifying would be fun though!
If not possible, does anyone know where any free Na'vi-based models are to play with? I loved this movie, i watched it last night and think i've become a lil obsessed lol.

You might want to look into "image modeling" software. I'm going to use AutoDesk Image Modeler but there are a lot more programs out there. And no your not going to get the Models to play with no more than I'm going to get HQ images of MagaTrons crazy sword arm gun!

    Patton,

Avatar has got to be the best film I've seen in a long time, it is the Star Wars of this century. I was 17 when Star Wars came out and remember how it affected every film that came after for many years.

One quick question though, why did they go with the blue skin? That was rather bland compared to the briliantly colored Banchee and other figures in the film. Not that I'm complaining mind you. Like I said that film will be as influental as Star Wars was in the 70's.

Also like the way they handled the 3D, every other 3D film I've ever seen left me with motion sickness, but not Avatar. Ever see Frankentien 3D LOL?

    Great work!

Could you show us some of the animation-mesh wires? Any other further pics are more than welcome too.

    Cheers!
