Brutal Honesty

Thanks for the reference to Rousseau, I've seen his works before and liked them even thou I never knew who he was.

Heh, you will get my honest opinion, if I have one Gurgler, however it is not always the art that you are praising, it is often a person's progress and growth. For myself, I have no delusions that I am going to be a Rousseau but I do appreciate the feedback. A "that's cool". Suggestions, critisims, and teachings I think is welcome here by all.

As for being traitorous, I know what you mean. I am extremely loyal to my friends and I don't think it was an amicable parting from Zacademy, but it could be worse! I always thought that Pixelator was a god
now we know that he is the "Man behind the Curtain" I am sure this will be the place where Zthings will be done and I will be here.

Yeah, we shoulda known there was more to Pixelator than met the eye, he was just too darned knowledgeable. Knowing that he is Ofer, makes me feel much better actually.

I remember posting a question to Pixelator asking if he was using the Demo or the commercial version. I feel rather silly now...
He said he has been using ZBrush for quite some time...That should have given me a clue, since it was real new at the time, but I can be rather dense...

Hi Guys,

It`s sometimes hard to take critisism but it really helps.

When I began to learn how to use ZBrush before Christmas I was turning out 3 or 4 images a day trying to use every function or button I could find. I produced the ZBorg image (on the left below) and posted it to the academy to get some feedback. I thought I was the artist/modeller of the year and was really pleased with myself.

I received lots of nice comments and one in particular made me stop and think. it said...

Nice image Glen, however, there is no lighting evident and there is very little in the way of shadows? or words to that effect.

I was shattered. How dare he knock my wonderful work. Who did he think he was?

So...off I go with no intenion of touching my work in any way.

Three hours later I had learned all there was to know about ZBrush shadows and lighting and produced the image on the right. From that day my work improved dramatically.

The comment came from Kurisu who I cannot praise or thank enough. I don`t know anything about the internal workings of Pixologic and I wear no mask of annonimity.

I like to receive praise for my work, it makes me feel good. There is no better praise than that from an equal or someone who does what you do. I also get a buzz from helping others improve their work and seeing them develop. These are the reasons we are all here and the bitterness....well...who can say.

I think you have to consider the source. Some beginners do better and respond better to encuragement, with small helpful hints. Same may be true for the casual artist, just looking to have fun with the tools. Where as a professional artist would do better with cold, hard facts.

Faced with tough feedback, a proffesional won't give up. They will move on, ignoring the critique or bettering themselves with it. Where as a beginner may take up another hobby. I don't want to see that. When all is said and done, it still needs to be fun.
