Too much for what?
that is what we are using in our game.
For a lead character it is a fine number of polygons, the restrictions we are encountering deal with texture numbers and sizes.
The numbers we use currently are
20k to 30k for lead character
5k to 10k for opponent characters
1k to 3k for background characters.
This isn't something I just made up, it's what we use in our games.

I also think that 24k is quite much for that model, the 12,5k model looks just has good if not better.
I agree that guy doesnt know what he is talking about! We also use your above mentioned poly figures. Even higher in some cases. Gone are the days of reducing a fine sculpt to a polygon taco! Nice work man!
