    Default Macgregor_oi's sketchbook

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums here. I like how people of all skill levels post here. LOTS of inspiration going around. I have been addicted to Zbrush for some time now and its about time that I post some work. I would say that I'm intermediate level sculptor. I still have a lot to learn, and I always welcome any crits that anyone may have.

First post is going to be a Intellect Devourer. I picked this by randomly flipping the D&D monster manual. I made this for fun to take a brake from another project. Its about 6 hous or work so far. The MatCap is a blank white skin MatCap that i have been working on.

The 2nd post is my practice on anatomy. The Skeleton I got from a 3d world magazine a year or 2 ago. The Muscles are all Zphears. I have been following Zack Petroc's awesome Gnomology anatomy tutorial to get the placement right. 4 Hours of work so far. The shader on the skeleton is Ralf Stumpfs MBMatCap

    More stuff to come.

    Thanks.

    Default Mind Flair

This is a Mind Flair. I also got this concept trolling old D&D books. I think that this guy and they Intellect Devourer will make a good pair for something more finished. This guy needs lots of work and i have learned a lot since i made him. I hope to get back to him some time soon.

Here is a doodle i did this afternoon. Far from a completed bust, but it was fun to sculpt. I may follow it out further or back it up a bit by taking out the horns.
I'm starting to get the hang of this. I have to keep reminding my self to slow down and rely put time into the lower resolutions. I need to thank Zack Petorc for his freeking fantastic anatomy tutorials!!

Hi! I like that render of the intellect animal and the legs are awesome, not crazy about the brain though.

    Muscle study is very cool

    Cheers!

    Default Hard surface detail

I have been problem solving how to add hard surface detail. have an idea, and created this ztool that i feel makes adding hard surface detail easer.

This is a unrefined method. There are things that i already want to improve. Please anyone who want to add or piggy back of this please do!
A nice feature of this is that you can model all sorts of things that will go inside of the box. they don't have to be a grill. fill it full of piping or wires or have a armor plate anything. Just keep it in a polly group and hide it if you don't need it

    ZBrush-Document.jpg]

I'm going to use this rufed in shape and add a air vent to the flattened area.

    ZBrush-Document2.jpg

I attempt to line up the grill over the target area. I'm using shift to line up s that its easy to capture the alpha.

    ZBrush-Document4.jpg

Its not to hard to line it up with transparency on, be sure to keep the box part if the grill planar.

ude drag rec to place it

I refined the idea a bit. This time making everything within zbrush. I'm using a polly mesh plane with 16 faces. Then deleting the center 4 to make the window. Its more or less a mask for whats behind it, in this case a protective grill.
The plane "mask" can be subdivided to get a nice match to where your placing the detail on your model. Be sure to always be looking perpendicular to your window when moving points to ensure it remains planar.

Some of the things that i plan on making to put behind this window are 1 A mass of wires going everywhere. 2 a circular turbine "placing if off center wold look cool also" . 3 An armor plate to go over the whole. 4 A net work of tubes with reinforced intersections. 5 Some of the same items with damaged sections. 6 Gears. 7 Some sort of electrical conduits. list can go on and on.

I think the easy way to use this is to clone out of the model that your going to b placing the alpha onto and append it into this tool. Line up your object to the tool best you can. pull the points of your window to match your object. fit your screen to your window making sure to not let any of the background show. using the grab doc in the alpha pallet. bam fast easy custom made to your model alpha.

    latest doodle, 6 hours in

Please CC this, Its my first go a getting a good likeness. It's dame hard and I need opinions from people who haven't been starring at it all day. The hair is only blocked in. Its not done, but I think it's close be being done. The pose is more less the bottom right with out the eye patch. I have the patch as a sub tool however.

Hey dude, you have a good start, but i recommand to work the likeness on a neutral expression. The girl looks like a friend of yours, try to have some neutral pictures form her, on many angles, and with hair back. You will have to see the forehead.
    Now for the anatomical crits:
    - there is barely no eyelids on your model, especially lower eyelids.
    - the area between the eyes, at the top end of the nose, is to thick.
    - the lower part of the nose seem correct but it didn't looks like her nose. Look carefully at the soft edges on her nose.

Keep it up, i know what it's like to work on likeness, i'm on this exercise too.
