Default New Character WIP (Playing with SSS)

Hi all. This is an SSS test on a new character that I'm creating. It's a WIP anyhow. I plan to add accessories etc so far this is just skin and stuff but having just learnt SSS it took me ages to sorta get it. I've been avoiding SS for so long coz using Maya is frustrating for me still but decided to progress and take a shot at it. In any case this is my first proper attempt at SSS and these are the results.

(From back view I hid the head coz I didn't work on back of head since I'll add hair anyway and my seams are there)

I don't mind feedback I'm sure the anatomy is still wrong somewhere like it always is for me lol, and also I'm new to realistic skin shading so can use all the advice I can get.

I basically learnt SSS and creating Eyes from Gnomonology, thanks to Alex Alvarez! I would recommend those training videos to anyone they're awesome!

Hope you like anyways. All sculpts are Zbrush of course! And much of the texturing.

Nice modeling but I have a small problem with the eyes. The white is too white, you might want to gray it out a bit or go more toward a flesh tone (just a little!). In the render of the body the green of the eye has just a bit too much glow (or something) to it. Otherwise it is all very nice work and I'm just nit-picking.

I think the anatomy is great ... and the skin texturing is too but as victimville and VinayKr said ,maybe you should work a little on the eyes making them a little darker and on the eyebrows case he looks a bit g*y otherways I think it's a really great piece of work ,really like it

Hi guys and thanks for replies

Thanks I will fix the eyes at once then, make em darker, less 'glow' and more flesh-like etc.

But I didn't understand the part about eyebrow so much, did you mean make it less angled and add more bulk beneath eyebrow above eyelid? Just to be sure.

Lol you said looks a lil g*y Definitely don't want him to look g*y haha yea so must fix at once.

Anyways this is still a WIP will update hopefully soon and add hair and clothes and armor and weapon hopefully Thanks again!

I think what VinayKr meant is to add more mass beneath the texture of the eyebrow just so it's not only a texture so it'll stand out more and look more realistic. And the other thing as you understood is really to make the eyebrow more straight ,with less curve to it (as you can see in this model for instance http://www.pixolator.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=061553 )

Anyway as i said the model is looking great and I cant wait to see an update!

I honestly have to tell you that the eyes are wayyyy too feminine. Right now it makes him look like a bulky drag queen (unless thats what you're modeling?)... Anyway i think it's mainly the way the eyebrows arch up and are so thin and sharp like they were plucked and painted. Also the eyelashes are shaped like womens' as well and seem like he has eyeliner. Try finding some photos of masculin males from catalog ads or online & follow that.

Because right now it really seems like you used womens' eyes as reference.

here's a quick overpaint to give you an idea. Keeping the MetalGearSolid style intense eyes i think you're going for, but not quite so girly! Try hiding half of the face at a time and compare the difference.

    Hey guys and thanks again!

And Art-Machine thanks a lot you got it spot on I was indeed trying to get those MGS style intense eyes look but failed and got something too feminine instead by sorta random chance also (I knew it lol) Also I'm having difficulty getting the eyelashes to render right without looking feminine that's the main prob atm

Thanks for the paint over, is very helpful will use it when fixing.

OMG lol what an embarrassment actually second time I look at this. Can't believe I posted him with such feminine eyes lol. Someone even gave me 1 star lol!

Drag Queen!? LOL missed that part of comment first time round.

Must be quick to redeem myself:

    Fixed slightly.

Is this more masculine I hope?

Dont wory man, i smack myself all the time too when looking at progression shots of my stuff. What counts is that you're adjusting as it goes along and it looks good at the end. You took constructive criticisms and rolled with it, that shows you have a good quality for growth.

If you think it looked bad before, it can only mean it's better now right?

And it is, the eyebrows dont say female to me anymore. And looks like you all but removed the eyelashes which is good also. Keep up the evolution

    Thanks ArtMachine!

I agree, and it is a WIP after all, only the skin and upper body. It's one of the reasons to post things here. To get crits based upon which to make fixes before progressing to other parts (like armor / clothes) to make sure it looks good at the end at least.

In the meantime I will progress to other accessories in this model and hair because no one seems to have given a crit on the musculature or skin so far I think.

    Thanks again

Hi again. I got good critiques for face (feminine eyes) but I just wanted quick critiques for body also (I know there's that SSS leaking problem at hand hip contact point but I mean besides that like anatomy) so i post body without head and I fixed body texture a bit: haven't worked much on it since but will proceed further soon hopefully when I get time.
