Zbrush, afaik still does not advance in it's modeling capabilities besides the unique and amazing upcoming tools. So, I'd say it is safe to have Silo as companion even if you only end up using it to close holes and tweak or layout a base mesh because ZSpheres ate your Lunch again...

PS:Painting without UV's is already possible. It's vertex painting. And yes, it's coarse right now. And it will be in the next version as well. But the next version will have poly counts so high that you will actually have more than one poly per screen pixel.... Then it is fun simpply to paint polygons. The only challenge is to get THAT into any of the other 3d packages.... One would have to convert the surface to a texture. Which of course is no problem as there is the col->tex_ture button.

I recently purchased Silo which I use as my primary modeller. I love it and definately recommend it to anyone. It`s particularly good when used with Zbrush: I can quickly bulk out a model in Zbrush, either starting with a Zsphere mesh or simply editing a 3dsphere, and then import that model into Silo to redo the topology and to get good edge flow. This refined model can then be brought back to Zbrush to add hi-res details and for texturing (although, as for the hires editing, this can also be done in Silo 2, which is currently available as a beta if you purchase Silo 1.42 now. You will also get a free upgrade to version 2 once it`s out of beta)

It`s fairly easy to learn, it has great support from nevercenter and from the user base. Plus, at the price, it`s an absolute bargain.

Go for it, you won`t regret it

Hello ,i have buy silo 2 for modeling and Detailing and use Zbrush only for textur and working with alphas and projection master for all the extrem details. To render i use Modo. And for the low price of Silo you can not make a bad buy. The next Zbrush version will not come this Year and not the next.We have mudbox before i think.

Mudbox looks worth the wait. I would check into that before Silo.

One big question......mudbox is going to cost how much? Cost is an issue here. Any ideas....I thought I had heard a large amount of money for Mudbox. Not sure though.

    Default price

here is a quote from http://www.mudbox3d.com/faqs.html

    How much will Mudbox cost?
Pricing has not yet been announced. Though Mudbox is a highend industrial tool in its genesis and focus, it is important to us that Mudbox be accessible to home users and students, and Mudbox pricing will reflect this concern.

What that means I have no idea, but I would think not in the MAYA price range.

    my guess $250 to $600

I am happy with Heaxagon2.1. It's a little buggy, but once you get to know the bugs, it works well. I wish Pixologic and Headus would joing and make some really tight software.

    Default videos from characteranimator.com

Bernhard Haux demonstrates his custom utility for XSI which uses an x,y deformation grid technique (like Photoshop's Liquify except for 3D models) permitting squash/stretch tweaks from camera eye view. Other videos at the same page demo more custom rigging tools that (to me, at least) seem rather sophisticated. Worth a look.
