    Default Dusty's Sketchbook

So I decided to start a sketchbook to show my progress in learning.
Here is the first of a set of sculpts I wish to make of my family and friends. This is my late Grandfather, who passed away the end of last year. He was about 16 and this was taken when he was drafted into the Navy. And he became a dedicated serviceman. As tribute to him, it seemed fitting I start here.

Hey! Coming on leaps an bounds!

Good likeness, but the earlobe needs to be thicker, eyebrow pointier, corners of mouth further indented into the face.

    Cheers,

    R

Great to see such a great improvement of your Skills!
I agree with Rory_L, and you could improve the Nose a little bit :-)
On the Photo the Nose is not so clearly visible, so you could look at other Noses ;-)
    But overall I'm impressed :-)

Hey everyone, sorry for not replying sooner, been dead in bed with a bad case of flu!

Anyhow thanks for all the C&C's.

    Disco Stu: thank you!

    bicc39: thank you!

luoyunhao: thank you for the advice and encouragement.

nightwoodwolf: thanks for your support as always.

Rory_L: Thanks for the support and pointers, your right on the dime with your suggestions. Funny, when your stare at a picture for a few hours the details get lost after a while. Now you pointed them out, when I get a chance I will correct them.

John Strieder: Thanks man! your work is also inspiring to me. And your correct about the nose. I think most of it comes down to lighting and the nostrils got smoothed out at somepoint and I forgot to fix them.

Right! on to the next sketch........

Another sketch in the 'sculpt my Family to improve my skills' series.

I found my son asleep on his bean bag in his room and it inspired me to sketch this:

EDIT: I just wanted to add that this is the most wonderful feeling when you can take members of your family and make these sculpts.
My Grandma was thrilled with the picture of my Grandfather.
Thank you Pixelogic for an amazing tool that is allowing me to achieve this.

I made the body using ZSpheres, and then made a childs head in Blender 3D using my sons head as reference. I exported the ZSphere made body (after making it a mesh of course) and imported it to blender and attached the head, subdivided once, and low and behold, a bese mesh body!

    daniel basemesh.jpg

I used mesh extract for the trousers and pajama top then sculpted away. Once happy I posed the model and made the bean bag out of a sphere.
Transpose master is an amazing tool by the way!

The hair is not quite right, but it's hard to make fine fluffy hair like my son has.

Nice work on both portraits, Mark. I really like the one of your grandfather. Maybe I might borrow your idea...my grandfather was in the U.S. Navy (as was I). He passed on September 12, 2001, the day after the attacks on the U.S. He was extremely patriotic and spent his civilian career working for NASA. It's such a shame that his last day on Earth was witness to such atrocities.

Sorry Slosh! I missed your reply!

    Go for it!

I cannot describe the feeling of seeing the look on my Grandma's face when she was given the picture.

It really is such a cool thing to be able to give someone you care for and admire.

    Hey guys and gals!

So here is a WIP of a character from the game Shadowrun (not the computer game, the table top role playing game.)

This is my charater called Sweeps he's an elf (you tell from the ears ) and he's a covert ops specialist in the game:
