stretching bump map

i’m having a problem with stretching bumps on my bump map.

when i bring the bump map to maya and render, the bumps are, well… stretched.

i have laid out the UV’s in maya, and they’re alright when i put a checker shader on it to test.

yet when i export the texture, the bumps and veins stretch. i know that when i’m painting on the model, sometimes it is on an angle, so could this be the problem?..

for example, if i’m facing the front of the character, and spray bumps on thechest, some of the overspray goes to the ribs, and when i rotate to look at the ribs, the bumps are all streaked.

does it mean the brush has to be exactly perpendicular to the model whenever i paint a certain area?
or am i missing something, where i have to set the alpha or brush to follow the normals of the model.

btw, the settings in Projection master are set to only color and yes i didflip the texture vertically before exporting.

hope you guys can help.
