    Default (some) Lights On!

    Hello,

I want to show you the first tests for the glowmap. to get those ligth on the ship I did the following:
-rendered the ship on one layer with displacement
-used the dispmap as base for the glowmap, put on a black background and colored the windows and so on
-on a second layer i placed the model again, this time with glowmaterial, glowmap as texture and dispmap as alpha for displacement. But the dispmap intensity value has to be more flat than the ship itself. otherwise the glowing parts would dissapear benieth the displaced geometry.
-if everything went fine youŽll have a proper geometry render and on top the lights. Due to the black background the rest of the model doesnt show, just the windows and stuff.

I very suggest to have a look at the original size - there you see the the glow-pixols seem to fly on top of the ship at certain angle. IŽll try to fix that as good as possible.

there is still a LOT to tweak and of course to finish, glowintensity, radius ect, but IŽm quite pleased for a first try

every comment and crit is welcome, of course!

    greets

    'Quite pleased'...?
That's already a stunning looking piece there, froyd - more like a piece of exquisite jewelry than a spaceship
Checked the detailing on the full-sized image too - incredible

Really impressive greebling. How dense did you need to make your mesh to pull detail that fine out of it with a displacement map?

thanks you all, you replies keep me motivated!

IŽm almost done with the shiplights and wanted to hear your opinion. Its really hard for me to tweak glowing intensity, radius and allover lightning since my machine has seen some years. Even fast render needs up to 3 sec every time I change a material or light value. Document size is at maximum, and has 2 layers. One for the solid version of the ship, one for the version with light-map and glow material. The ship itself consists of 2,13 million polygons.

again, any comments and crits are welcome!

On the earlier render of the Ship it looks more like there is light behind the windows...on your last render the light-effects look like they could be specular highlights of the metal material...if you dont want to do a post-production correction on your render, there should be a greater contrast between the metal and the glow-material.
Can't you set the glow higher and use the clone-brush to clone from the glowmaterial-layer...i mean in the way they used "transparency" in the old days of ZBrush ?

agree regarding the lights. A tad more brightness would point them out nicely. Brilliant Raumschiff! Another thing I like and have not seen before is the font of the ships name. Great idea to cut that out. You don;t mind if I use that in the near future 8-))).
