Here's a test with a maze sphere created only by displacement. i.e. just use the generated maze as a displacement map on a plain sphere in the renderer.

The maze was generated in the Gimp, and the render was done in Gelato. I think Gelato handles > 8 bits per channel, although the Gimp doesn't.

I think this method has some merit for making nice curvy displacements (like text). That way you don't have to worry about chunky displacements due to geometry flow that doesn't match your letters. I'm sure there are other cases where it would be easier as well.

Zbrush still lets you do a lot of neat stuff quickly that you can't do in other programs easily, and that's what it's all about.

    Thanks for looking

    *edit*

I got a question in a PM about the map and sphere, and in case anybody else wants to know the answer...

The maze is 1024x1024, and I don't think the sphere much matters because when Gelato subdivides, it creates a true curved surface. In this case though I just used the sphere command, which creates a nurbs sphere in Gelato.

Both the Gimp and Gelato are free, so you can try it if you like.

Sorry for that, will be up soon. My ex-isp has simply vanished on me and my clients..... Since then I am re-instating websites and clients again according to priority. I have my OWN hardware in a datacenter now and am gaining speed right now. And this tutorial and my own stuff.... has a low priority. But I will get around it this long weekend. Thanks for your patience.

    Cheers

PS:If anyone would like to own a website with the best service imaginable... let me know ;-).

Unfortunately I cannot edit the main post but here it is again as .mov for any platform:

It's 25MB and if you right click and 'save target' then you can download it.

    Zeeblers

    ZBrush Document.jpg

To get the pattern I used the zbrush texture Txtr13
    Txtr13.jpg

Then by using the free plugin (photshop - psp type plugin)
    http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/zeric/tessela/
I transformed it to this pattern
    Txtr13a.jpg

If you find yourself creating some textures for Zeebling post some of the Zeebles you created with

    Have fun

And if you know of any other cool free plugins like Tessela give a posting to them - Thanks

Post such questions in troubleshooting forum

See when you eneter PM shading and fade option isnt selected.

We mostly use doublesided with deformation and not with texturing, if you have to use it, then see that your model is upright at right angles by pressing shift.

    best avoid it all togther.

If you still have problems, show a screenshot in trouble shooting forums.
