Default ZScript: Update to MapIt, v1.4

    MapItSplashTitle.jpg
This is a modest update to the old MapIt script which should make the tool easier and more fun to use. Once you start the script, click the MapIt logo to bring up the help notes.

The main improvement is under the TILE button. Now, when you make changes in the horizontal and vertical symmetry, the repeat pattern updates immediately. You also have a new menu option to make the current alpha into the current texture. (There are plenty of neat alpha images that make nice repeat patterns.)

Once you are satisfied with the repeating texture layout, you can then generate a new repeating TEXTURE or a new repeating ALPHA or BOTH. As soon as the new texture and/or alpha are created they're applied to the current model... automatically.

Also, I've fixed several annoying bugs that slipped by in the original version.

    INSTALLATION:

The MapIt_1-4.zip file contains all the files you need to install the new version. To install, do the following:

    Unzip into the ZStartup\Zplugs directory.

In the Zplugs folder you will find MapItLaunch.zsc and a new folder named MapIt which will contain all of the necessary files for running MapIt. (Users of ZLauncher can find the MapIt.zsc file and MapIt.psd, the icon for ZLauncher).

    TO USE:

Next, restart ZBrush. Look in the ZPlugin menu and you'll find a sub-group named PSNAP. Under PSNAP you'll see a button named MapIt. This launches the MapIt utility.

If you want, you can Ctrl-drag this button to a place on your ZBrush interface. Press Ctrl+Shift+I to make the MapIt button a permanent part of your custom interface. Now, whenever you want to create a tiling texture map or alpha map, load a model and texture and click on the MapIt button.

These files will be installed from the MapIt_1-4.zip file:

    In the ZStartup\Zplugs directory
    - MapItLaunch.zsc

    In the ZStartup\Zplugs\MapIt directory
    - arrowD.jpg
    - arrowL.jpg
    - arrowR.jpg
    - arrowU.jpg
    - BACK.jpg
    - BOTTOM.jpg
    - FRONT.jpg
    - LEFT.jpg
    - mapit.psd
    - Mapit.zsc
    - mapit-backplate1.jpg
    - mapit-help.jpg
    - RIGHT.jpg
    - TOP.jpg

If you find any other bugs or problems, please post here to let me know. Also, if you do any interesting work with MapIt please share it in this thread.

    Thanks,
    Sven

Seems like everything is working ok... no reported problems yet.

    Nuts, something to try:

Take the same repeat you're using for the emboss relief and load it as texture. Then set up a main and secondary color (one dark and one light). Finally, in the TEXTURE menu press Grad (gradient colorize) and you'll get a perfectly registered color version of the relief pattern on your object (reference a couple of the MapIt objects to see what I mean.)

I also want to thank everyone else who took the time to download the new version. Hope you find it useful. I'll try to post some more MapIt samples by next week.

    Sven

    Thanks Sven,

I was trying to find Aurick's mini tutorial on doing gradients in z2 cuz I was thinking kinda the same thing but got side tracked,(I wanted to see if that one alpha I made and gradient would allow me to make a basket using pure black for transparency without having to delete polys!, I think your method would work perfectly for this). I think what you mentioned here is a bit different, seems easier and definitely sounds cool!!! Will have to experiment with that!!!
