uvmapping

Hi everyone yes I am new to the world of sculptris.

Can someone tell me what uvmapping is for, and what it does.

Basically, it’s just how the computer maps a 2d texture onto a 3d model. Usually, you can use other programs to manually uv map your model by breaking it up exactly as you want it and putting as much detail as you want into very specific areas that way.

Sculptris does this automatically. Which also means that it isn’t as perfect as it could be, but it more than suffices in most cases. So it’s pretty much just for “painting” your model in Sculptris. Supposedly there’s a way to define your UV map a bit more before the program does it’s automatic stuff, but I never did figure that out.

The first paragraph on wikipedia might explain it better:

UV mapping is the 3D modeling process of projecting a 2D image to a 3D model’s surface for texture mapping. The letters “U” and “V” denote the axes of the 2D texture because “X”, “Y” and “Z” are already used to denote the axes of the 3D object in model space.

Thank you, I will take it to heart and learn.
