Default BB-8 Magic WheelChair Kurt Boutilier

Great contest for the kids... I was sketching ideas last night and want to do a design with BB-8 and with the files provided the model will change a bit but the over all feel and look should be close.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with.

I love the concept. Especially the original drawing.

    Default BB8 wip2

BB8's edges are all blocked in and I can go in and start the retopo and get nice clean lines hopefully over the weekend. I made his lower side panels all the same for easier manufacturing...1 shape then make copies instead of 4 different ones. I am also thinking of making BB8's head so it can rotate. It will really bring him to life with all his sound effects. Lastly, for the final model I might make the front panel able to pop off around the bottom of the circle to the top for the kiddo to be placed easier in the chair. Hopefully I will have time to finish this.

    Default BB-8 Wip# 3

I started to clean up BB's head plates today. I still have the larger front plate to do as well as the his top. His body wont take nearly as long. I also included a small breakdown of how I've been cleaning up his plates. Keeping 3D printing in mind for when I dynamesh all the parts together for a print friendly mesh.

This looks great Kurt!! Love the idea of the rotating head with sound effects. Hey, I really like your
process stills too! Cool to see how you work up the panels
using dynamesh and topology tools. Everyone has a little different approach I love seeing
    other methods.

    Default BB-8 Wip#4

BB's head is all cleaned up, and i can start in on the body this week. He is just a bit more stylized as far as his edges go so the 3D Print will pop a bit more along the edges. The head will merge (dynamesh) nicely for a water tight mesh and easy to hollow out. I will split the top part of his head so the electronics (head rotator) can be placed fairly easy. The body should not take as long as its just the main half circle and one smaller one that can be duplicated four times.

Thanks for the feedback as well. =)
