Fix mesh integrity without breaking paintjob?

Like the title implies, is there any way to fix mesh integrity without breaking the paintjob (colorize layer)?

I know the idea is to fix mesh integrity before painting but I got ahead of myself and now I’m in a predicament where fixing the mesh integrity with ‘Fix Mesh’ ruins the painting.

I could use some help with this… no screenshots for now but if you need them I can upload. Thanks in advance.
