ZBrush Interview: Dragon Age: Inquisition

Banner.jpg

In March of 2011, hot on the heels of the title’s release we were pleased to bring you an interview with the art wizards at BioWare that worked on Dragon Age 2. Six months before that we also posted an interview with them regarding Dragon Age: Origins. Both got rave responses from the community, so we have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to talk with them about Dragon Age: Inquisition!

Obviously, it wound up being a long wait. DA:I was built on a new engine (Frostbite) and was also the first BioWare title to come out for the new generation of consoles: Playstation 3 and Xbox One. As if that wasn’t enough, this game wound up being the biggest one yet with more to do and more to see than both of its predecessors put together.

The wait has been worth it! Today we are extremely pleased to be able to present our newest interview with the BioWare team. Please join us in welcoming Shane Hawco and all the rest back to ZBrushCentral! We hope that you enjoy reading the interview as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together!

SPOILER ALERT: This interview does contain a few spoilers regarding the game’s story. If you haven’t played the game yet and don’t want any secrets revealed ahead of time, we recommend waiting until you’ve finished your first playthrough before reading the interview.

Here’s a sampler of the many images that you’ll find. You can view them in high resolution from the interview pages.

Many thanks to Shane, Aaron, Francis, Patrik, Graham, Uri, Ramil and Rion! We are so appreciative of the time and effort you put into getting this interview ready, even while working on the newest DLC. We are also delighted that you shared some content with us before it becomes available to see anywhere else!

Pixologic would also like to extend our thanks to BioWare and Electronic Arts for having consented to sharing this interview with the ZBrush community.

Use this thread to discuss the interview!
And look for more artwork from the BioWare team!

Be sure to also check out our many past interviews, which can be found in the ZBrush Artist Interviews forum and the User Stories page at the Pixologic website.

Hello guys here are some of the assets that I made for Dragon Age Inquisition. I made almost every rock shipped with the game and few other objects when I had the chance to  All models are made in Zbrush with polypaint for textures and standard brushes with few custom made alphas. Many of them are between 1.5 and 3 years old. Thank you guys for watching and thanks to my friends at Bioware for the great times that we had making that game.

Love the work!

Absolutely stunning! Great tips and inspiration!
Thank you so much for this look into the development process of one of my favorite games.

Thank you for sharing all the amazing work. This is awesome.

I have to say, rocks were among my favorite things about that game. Many beautiful shapes and formations. The landscapes in general were fantastic, if you’ll excuse the pun. It’s a colossal pity the game itself was so empty of meaningful content, but that’s outside the scope of this forum.

Would you mind saying how much time it took per average asset? Did you have to retopo manually at all, or was decimation enough? Favorite brushes? Any insight into the process would be great!

Congrats for the amazing work !

I’m currently playing the game and I’m stunned by the main characters’ faces and the way they animate. Also, the environments are a pleasure to wander through as they are beautifully crafted. My only crit would be that the armors seem to be highly reflective, sometimes to the point of looking like plastic toys.

Overall, great game to play as it is clear that the dev team is made of skilled people who love their jobs and were given enough freedom to offer players a great experience.

PS: I hope the character team will come around post of their work.

really amazing

Hi guys, I am a senior character artist here at BioWare.

I have been working on quite a few various things for this project.
Here are some of the assets I did for Dragon Age Inquisition in this past 2-2,5 years.

I would like to thank the team and BioWare for making this possible and you guys for watching.

Still need to add those to my page.
