Ever since I was a child (many moons ago), I have been an avid collector of art (primarily, comic art). Over the years, I have seen some amazing private commissions - some "one of a kinds" and others "limited editions" (i.e. 1/100). I have also seen several commissioners making profit by selling their commissioned work (based entirely on copyrighted characters). In the absence of obtaining a licence, how are commissioners able to produce and sell such copyrighted material without legal reprecussions? My reason for inquiry is simple (and intrinsic): I also wish to commission copyrighted material, but in a lawful manner. Any insight and/or clarification would be greatly appreciated.
Sometimes there are legal consequences. Google "Thomas Valenty" and "warhammer" for one. There have been other similar cease & desist demands, Thomas Valenty is the one I remember as some of my friends play warhammer.
