Your chance to s c a r e people

with the power of your imagination!!!

It's that time of year again! The time when we open a call for ZBrush artists everywhere to create their scariest, creepiest or even most whimsical artwork with a Halloween theme. At the end of the season we will then gather all completed entries into a special gallery at the top of ZBC's Main Forum, ready to put a spell on the community at large!

The Halloween Challenge has been a tradition going back to ZBC's earliest days and we always enjoy seeing what great ideas our members' imaginations can scare up! In fact, check out last year's challenge by clicking here.

To participate in the Challenge, all you need to do is create a new thread in the Halloween Challenge 2012 Forum. Between now and October 31, work on your creation and share Work-In-Progress (WIP) images of its steps in that thread. If you're feeling especially ambitious you can even create multiple images. This is an excellent opportunity to share your favorite ZBrush techniques with the rest of the community as well as to learn from other artists. We encourage everyone to have fun and to interact with each other as much as possible!

Finally, to have your artwork included in the gallery, all you need to do is post your FINISHED image in this thread. The deadline for entries will be the witching hour: Midnight (Pacific Time) on October 31, 2012. Please also include a link to your WIP thread from the Halloween Challenge 2012 Forum.

Instructions for Gallery Entry

• Your entry must have a Halloween theme.
• Your entry should be created entirely in ZBrush. It can be a full scene, a turntable or a scary model.
• Keep it clean! No entry should require the nudity "Mature Audience" tag.
• Deadline for entries is the witching hour: Midnight (Pacific Time) on October 31, 2012.
• Reply to this thread and post your finished image. (No WIP images can be included in the gallery.) Also include a link to your WIP thread from the Halloween Challenge 2012 Forum. IMPORTANT: You MUST create an icon for your post in this thread. It will not work if you create your icon from the post within your WIP thread.

Ahhh yes, my favorite time of year! 2010 Halloween challenge is the reason I joined the forum.

May I ask how come the format changed last year? 2010 seemed very structured, and had a really really awesome breakdown thread for the top 3 entries. The breakdowns there remain some of the best I've seen throughout. Last year sorta just had random pictures by random members in one thread at the end. It was just a little anti-climatic, in my opinion.

Does that mean no compositioning of Zbrush renders in Photoshop or...?

Photoshop may be used for final compositing.

ZBrush must be used for the render.

This is a challenge, after all. It's an opportunity to investigate new techniques that you might not otherwise use simply because you're used to something else. Rendering is actually a great example here. We've often seen people take great models into another program, only to end up with a mediocre render that would have looked a lot better had it been done in ZBrush -- but they chose to use the other app just because it's what they are used to.
