    Default Lighting tutorial request

I love the sculpt; especially the lighting and material. Is there a reference tutorial for lighting? Knowledge means talent! Thanks in advance.

slocik - Thanks for the constructive crit - Agreed, I could have spent more time on those areas.

LeoAMD - Thank you - it's the BasicMaterial with default settings except for the red color shift.

Medicinehorse7 - Thanks - I will try to get a quickie tutorial up in the next few days. The brief summary is that I used Best rendering (not BPR) with a 3 point light setup (key, fill and rim).

This one started from a sketchbook doodle -

Medicinehorse7 - here are my light settings - I used a key, 2 rims and a fill, they're all set to sun. Ambient is set to 0 and I have the intensities of my key and fill adding up to ~1.0. On the rims I just messed with the hue and intensity until I liked the result. Everything casts shadows except for the fill. I maxed out the shadow length and set the aperture to 10 (defined shadow with a bit of a soft edge). Shadow rays are set to 20, this controls how dithered the shadow edge is. I try to keep the rays as low as possible for speed, you can crank 'em for a smoother result.

I didn't use BPR because it lowered the overall render brightness when I started using multiple lights. I set render to best and used the render button instead of the BPR button.

    Hope that helps.

I like this last one. It looks like a cross between the Kingpin and a conehead.

Thanks Derek, I think both those characters crossed my mind while I was working on it.

Here's a sketch that I'm gonna do some more work on -
