Default [Contest] Mixamo - Fantasy Character - Zenchuck WIP thread

    First post on Sculptris forum!

I am a long time Blender user and I fell in love with Sculptris about a year ago.

So I'm just starting out on this character and looking for some good criticism. I'm also still figuring out what is possible inside Sculptris.

    Thanks,

    -Andrew

Hey Andrew, I like your sculpture work here. I have seen some of the base models and the anatomy can sometimes be really skewed while at other times the base models are outstanding.

What are your plans for her. Is she a character? Now you called her a character but is she going to have a back story?

OH i meant to ask. I am a blender user as well. Do you like the sculpting tools in Blender. I have tried using them again and again but once you have used sculptris, its hard to go back to.

The only thing about the blender sculpting that i really like is that you can move in and out of the sculpt modes and into edit and back as you work which is really handy for tweaking.

She is Zenobia, Queen of the ancient Palmyrene empire, a skilled warrior (archer) and natural leader. Her story is based on true events but my character will be fantasy in the sense that she is mostly imaginative. She has a Persian/Greek ancestry so I used photos of a Persian (Iranian) woman for reference.

Nothing negative to say about Blender - it's great for most things. That being said, I don't have much experience with the sculpting tools in Blender. My primary computer is an older laptop that can't manage well with high polygon numbers. Mostly I just love how simple and intuitive the controls are in Sculptris. The adaptive tessellation allows for more detail without overly heavy meshes. For me it was "love at first sight."

I try to move meshes back and forth between Blender and Sculptris. I find that the obj. import in Sculptris does not allow exact placement of objects and I always end up scaling and moving objects to match. For example, with this base mesh I could export to Blender and in Blender create an article of clothing to conform to the topology. At this point it would be nice to just import the new clothes into Sculptris and have the item match the existing sculpt in scale and location. This might not be a limitation of Sculptris, but just something I haven't learned properly how to do.

    Thanks for the feedback.

    -Andrew

I am very familiar with the Zenobia story--if you are going to do any illustrations using this character might I humbly suggest one of the most powerful ones for me and that is the fallen warrior queen being paraded through the streets of Rome.

If you do not mind, I will continue to follow this thread. Thanks for speaking with me.

Export the clothing and the character, and they will match. Make a project folder, and export everything together renaming each as you progress, i.e. frog.obj, frog-wCrown.obj, frogRetopo.obj, frog-wCrownRetopo.obj, frogRetopoUV.obj ....... etc. This is "How to" when you use Sculptris. And don't bother saving in .sc1 - Sculptris format, unless you must take a break in Paint-mode. Sculptris and Blender work well together, and Blender has Great tools for Retopo anything you can make in Sculptris!

    Thanks for the comments

I haven't worked out the hair, clothes, or how I am going to pose her yet. I will consider your suggestion.

Thanks for the tips on Sculptris. I have the workflow for moving back into Sculptris now Really happy about that.

I'm still trying to resolve the character. Here is a second attempt using the same base mesh. I will have to just settle and move to the next step.

She has a good basic shape! Very nice, have you ever looked at Andrew Loomis' female proportions?

I got a 404 error but I'm guessing it's a pdf of the book? I had a look at your website and I really like your designs and the projects that you have worked in. You designed the sculptris interface and logo which is amazing. I have to say that Sculptris is the most intuitive and easy to use software that I have ever tried - so good job

I did not design the original interface! Just the new one. The 404 is probably from how the forum is formatting my link. Thanks for taking the time to appreciate my work!

Man, that is impressive. Especially since you made all that in Sculptris! Great cloth, the hair is coming along nicely.
