    Default poda's 7 Deadly Sins

    Hey everyone,
I'm doing something I have never had the courage to do, or the dedication to complete.
I am posting a project I am working on, as I am working on it. I welcome your thoughts, good, bad or ugly!

Here's the original layout, an update and my initial sculpt...

I'm still missing 1 sin. I'll get her in ASAP

I absolutely love the expressions in your sketch! I wish more people would upload their sketches, they are one of my favorite things to see. /Very/ expressive without becoming cartoony. Facial nuances are an area I am still trying to learn, so my sincerest respect.

Thank you very much Rykka! My 3D work always looks better when I draw out my ideas first. Even when I am working from photos I benefit from doing a first pass on paper (or in this case, in Painter). My drawings are usually more expressive and interesting and I have an easier time revising them when they are not working. Unfortunately I often lack the patience to do a 2D pass before jumping into the 3D

This is an ongoing struggle because I want to be able to get the same level of expressiveness as quickly in 3D without the initial 2D work.

I did the base sculpt from photos without drawing anything. I feel like the likeness is solid but basic. And it took me a long time to get there. So I figured it was time to start drawing. That breathed more life into the work and let me quickly get a foundation for the layout... It just started coming to me.

I also forgot to give credit to http://hippydrome.com/ for the face topology reference.

Wellll, I threw away my early start on this by getting too caught up in other projects. So now I'm in a MAD rush to try to get this together in time to do a canvas print for the show!!! OUCH!

Here's the latest - head retopo completed. Body, jacket and hands created. Layout completed. Still MILES to go.

As always, comments and critiques welcome.

    Cheers,

    P

Well, as luck (or foolishness) would have it, I procrastinated too long on this and missed my window. Despite a desperate, mad dash to the finish line, it was not to be.

I ran into technical problems which may have had more to do with lack of sleep than anything else.

This prompted me to start a slightly less ambitious, self portrait concept based on this sketch...

I made some good progress in the few remaining hours before my print deadline. But ultimately ran into similar issues. This time, my displacement maps would not render!! I have never seen that one before.

So I decided to go as simple as possible, modo model, no displacements or bones! Angularity came from modo's Subdivision Surface edge weighting ability. I did use polypaint to create a color map, did some minor mesh tweaks and re Unwrapped the UVs in ZBrush. Then it was back to modo for multi pass rendering and finally a few minor photoshop tweasks and there you have it...

Here is a detail pick. I will post the full thing after the show..

    Cheers,

    Paul
