    Default Looking To Draw's Sketchbook

    Hello,

My name is Mike and I just recently discovered ZBrush. For the past several weeks I had immersed myself in learning all that I could through all the tutorials that I found (thank goodness there is a whole lot of them, it made my learning ZBrush that much easier. Thank you). Any rate, I just completed my first sculpt for an illustration I am working on and wanted to share and hopefully get some C&C.

I would like to post more assets to this project as I progress, and of course, post the final illustration (assuming I get positive feedback ).

    Thanks for your time.

Is he meant to be a midget with tiny arms?
If not, then you need to focus on the proportions and basic form before going into high detail.
Otherwise good job. Looks kinda like the diamond sword clan from Tribes Ascend.

Wow man. Not too shabby for just picking up the program. Like was mentioned earlier, there looks to be some issues with proportion and what not. If you really want to do character stuff, I would highly recommend getting into life drawing for a while to really build a foundational understanding of anatomy and all that. That being said, you managed to accomplish quite a bit here for your first ZBrush model. If you were to start a sketchbook thread here, I bet in a year you could be doing some pretty solid, cool stuff. Keep it up yo!

First of all Welcome to ZbrushCentral man
Great potential for your first work, I wished I would have started like this^^
But I can just concur with u3190, would recommend on studying human anatomy, in my oppinion zbrush is the best to learn human anatomy!
Looking forward seeing more from you!
    Cheers,

Thanks for the replies, I really appreciate the feedback. As for the proportion issue, you guys are right and didn't notice it on the render. The fact is I used a Poser figure for the base of the character and I think I used the standard "Ideal Adult" proportion which, as I recall, is about seven heads tall. Wasn't really thinking about it at the time, I just wanted to practice "hard surface" sculpting.

In the meantime, while I am sitting at my desk at work (no ZBrush here), I decided to experiment with my render in Photoshop (specifically the SSS and reflection layers). I wanted to see if I could achieve a more "metal" look to the armor. I think I got it here. Thoughts?

Default More stuff for my WIP

I am having so much fun with ZBrush. This week, I have created a couple of guns and a holster for my armored soldier. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Still learning the program. Just recently discovered remesh and projection. Still so much more to research. Thank goodness for all the tutorials and thanks to this community. I wouldn't have learned as much as I have without it.

You are definitely improving, however one thing to note with weapon design is that it needs to be functional and practical. The sniper rifle's handle looks too small, and it would be very difficult to wrap your finger around to the trigger.
Regarding the creature, I think you need to do some serious muscle anatomy studies before coming back and correcting it.
Trust me, correct anatomy makes something so much more believable.

Thanks Pete. Thanks Dan. If it weren't for all of the available resources and tutorials, and this community, I would never have gotten this far.

Default Portrait. First attempt at this.

So now I've decided to try my hand at a portrait study. I think it came out all right but I am open to critiques. This is also my first attempt with fibermesh. Had a difficult time with it at first (just getting the settings right so the hair wouldn't "clump" in places). Anyrate, here it is.

    I'm calling this piece "Sarge."

    Thanks ahead for looking.

    Default Dawn's Early Light

I am working on a sci-fi fantasy story where the protagonist is a smuggler/bounty hunter/gun-for-hire who flies around the galaxy in a space ship (instead of a station wagon?). My idea was to design a ship that was the "Millenium Falcon on steroids." This ship christened "Dawn's Early Light," is a converted, souped-up light freighter.

Rendered in Zbrush and composited in Photoshop. I used Edward Fleissig's tutorial on worn metal to create the ship's hull color. I was originally going to make the ship a two-tone champagne color with some scratches and damage, but when I played with the worn metal materials I loved the results. It gave the piece a look of an old die cast metal/lead toy. Hope you like. As always C&C welcomed.

I'm still working on the sculpt. Have a few more subtools to add to the rear and underside but will post when completed. I was just really encouraged when I completed the composite that I had to share.

    Default re

I have a design critique, not that you should change anything, but just food for thought. Something I've noticed in yours and many other Spaceship designs that seems to be out of place. Ventilation ports. As artist we look at them and think "Hey, thats mechanical and could make for some interesting hull covering". But on the technical side, there's no air in space to ventilate, and I would think any intuitive Astro-Engineer would find a way to remove waste gasses out with the engine exhaust. And a "Freighter" would probably not be expected to land on a planet, rather dock at Spacestation where the cargo could be transfered by shuttle or beamed or whatever. Just a thought.....
