    Default sketches n sculpts

    Hello...

I have dabbled with ZBrush a couple times in the past but hardly scratched the surface (no pun intended..)
A few months back I decided I just had to spend some time getting to know and use it beyond a little surface deformation... so I jumped in at what turned out to be the deep end and enrolled on Scott Eaton's on-line Digital Figure Sculpture course.

I thought I knew a little about ZBrush and anatomy... turns out I was way off on both counts! However, thanks to the course and youtube and a bunch of books and reference the fog is lifting.

So even if it's just for a little self motivation to keep pushing onwards I thought I'd start a thread. Of course it would be great to get some feedback and swap ideas with folks...

I'll start with some stuff from the Digital Figure Sculpture course.

    Default My left hand...

Another exercise from the course. Sculpt your own hand.
Photos are good but nothing beats having your subject right in front of you.
Available at any angle (within reason when its your own hand! ), I found it a great deal easier to understand and work from.
    A great exercise.

That full-figure pose is really well done, it looks to have all the correct deformations like the left pec, left rib cage and lower left back area. Did you use a reference as you sculpted? Theres got to be some left-handers out there that draw and sculpt the other hand I just havn't come across them.

Default Angle of thumb (large Image with ground)

    Nice work!

The hand sculpt is looking good.
It could very well be that my thumb is abnormal, but the angle of the thumb in your hand sculpt seems extreme.
Basicaly i could not naturaly bend my thumb to the angle shown in your sculpt. It's your hand, so it may be more bendy!

    Thanks Beholder!

Yeah, we were given pretty good reference of the life model. 8 photos in the round, from approximately every 45 degrees and a few close ups etc.

I hope he is fairly accurate.. I did spend a fair bit of time (more than I needed) getting the observed accuracy down.It would have been quicker and easier to be more generic but his subtleties were half the challenge. I think he used to be a dancer and has had some injuries that are evident when you get into it. Also other things that crop up in real life, like a differing number of serratus anterior and asymmetric abs that I found hard to resolve...

Like I wrote before.. there is still a lot to do to him to make him perfect.. but I'm not sure he needs to be. I learnt a lot and that's what matters...

    Cheers!

    Thanks Sadicus, glad you like...

I'm just looking... and the thumb is pretty much ok... but your right in that maybe the distal phalanx/section of the thumb could rotate upwards a few degrees towards horizontal a little more.. or maybe inward toward the palm by the same amount would compensate the tip rotation..?

    Cheers for your thoughts.

It's the thumb rotation. you should post an image of your hand! It would be a fun study.
Anyway nice work, I look forward to seeing more!

    @ sadicus

like I said the rotation of the end section of the thumb may be out a little... but I'd say it was true enough to mine.
I do think there is an issue with the what would be the 'knuckle of the thumb'? - joint of the metacarpal and first phalanx... marked in red, it could be out further at that angle... there's some mass missing from the corner of the joint.

Not sure what your not happy with about the little finger?
Looking at your photos, all I'd say is to remember that whilst the first metacarpals for the index and middle finger are fixed, the last two metacarpals (ring and little fingers) are not and will flex forward quite a bit depending on the person and could dramatically effect that side of the hand and rotation axis for the fingers. Yours look quite upright in comparison. You may as you say have less bendy hands.

I hope that helps with the issues you have...
This was by no means meant to be a perfect anatomical example, its just a sketch... and I am by no means an authority on any of this.
