    Default Tara's Sketchbook

Hi I have been silently watching this site for a long time, but I'm now in my final year of college and trying to focus on my Zbrush portfolio I started using Zbrush a year ago at school and finally purchased my own copy of the new release, so I'd like to start posting here to get some feedback and hopefully learn more!

I'll be polishing some of my previous work this semester and making some new stuff. For now, this is a character that I designed and modelled for the first half of my introduction to 3d Sculpture class last year. This is the model I finished in Zbrush 4,

And this is a turntable I rendered out and stuck in flash after playing around with the new material, lightcap and noisemaker features of R2

    Thanks for looking!

Great character and great sculpt/render. Love the flash player too.

It looks great and if you hadn't of shown the concept art I wouldn't be saying this, but I feel that you really lost some of the great parts of the concept. Details like the neck piece replacement doesn't look as good nor does the scythe. The hat lost a lot of great detail in the translation but most importantly, I feel the mood of the concept character got lost. It's up to you, of course, but I would go back and look at what made the concept so great and try to get closer to that.

Having said that I do like what you did, I just personally prefer the concept.

I'm glad you pointed this out. Looking at it now, I can see what you mean and I agree with you. Professors have made this comment to me on several occasions with other projects as well so I believe it's an issue I really need to address. I think I tend to deviate a lot from my original idea, thinking I'm making it better and more realistic or something, but it's also losing the "essence" of the idea. I'll probably try starting over with this concept and try to capture it a little better with a new sculpt rather than trying to change this one at this point. I'll keep everything you said in mind when I do, and for future adaptations! Thanks a lot for your feedback!

    Default Great

This is really fantastic, awesome work.
I would like to see the asymmetrical glow from the concept to appear on the 3d, but other than that it is really great.
That flash turntable thing is awesome! How was it made?

Thanks! I will try to play around with the lighting. I agree it's a little more dynamic in the concept :c

Glad you like the turntable Basically, I rendered a turntable in Zbrush, exported the .mov, then converted it to a PNG sequence in After Effects. Then I put it in flash to make the turntable. This guy has created an open source viewer that you can customize if you're interested: http://www.artstorm.net/plugins/turntable-flash-viewer/

    Default Charlie Chaplin

I'm currently working on a bust of Charlie Chaplin. So far I've only been doing stylized characters in Zbrush, and I want to be able to have a realistic portrait for my portfolio. Any critique or suggestions would be appreciated!

This is the reference I'm basing the final sculpt on:

I also have some side-view reference for the profile of the sculpt

And a back view, just for good measure

when having a closer look at the portrait's side view, you will notice the upper lip's slight overbite whereas both lip lengths are equal in your sculpt. In the sideview you may also notice the actor's chin is rounder than your scuplted counterpart. Skin folds around his mouth will need some refinement, too. The ear is attached in a different angle and has another inside structure.

your frontal process of the maxilla is too low. this makes the lower eyesocket larger than it should be and makes the checks mushy. I'm particularly seeing this in the side view, it's like the high point of the bone is at the level of the lower nose instead of much higher like it should be. Compare the front reference photo to your sculpt and you might see what i'm talking about also. http://www.upstate.edu/cdb/education/grossanat/imgs/skullantmax4.jpg

Thank you! Yes, I'm having a bit of a hard time with the lips since I'm trying to sculpt the expression of the front view where he has his lower lip kinda stuck out... but then it's hard to tell if I'm staying faithful to the profile of the mouth. I will take a closer look at that, though, along with the other pieces you noted. Find some more reference images and all that. Thanks again for your feedback
