Day 31
I took my laptop to AS220 for figure drawing night. Obiously instead of drawing it was sculpting in ZBrush. Three twenty minute poses and one half hour pose. This was quite the challenge.
And so this concludes my month of daily sculpting. I couldn't be happier that I did this. I learned a lot, made a few good things, a few bad things, but that was the point. "If you don't want to make bad sculpture then you'll never make good sculpture." I'll still be sculpting every day, but now I'm going to be working on longer pieces, a week at least. I'll probably still be posting progress here. Maybe in six months I'll do another month of dailies.
This is a very good thread, I like everything about it and the idea it self especially.
nope...
I don't know what I'm doing but I'm doing it anyway.
It's a great idea to do a daily sculpt. One thing I would suggest would be pay attention to form. Looking at your videos I feel you're working to high to fast. I also notice you add really fast but you do not subtract or move stuff around to often. You should start off at a low subdivision and move stuff around to get form of the head, then you can start building. Just a suggestion.
Thanks guys. The Cthulhu sculpt was actually from a small plastic statue a friend gave me.
Adio38. You're definitely right. I didn't do many process videos of the later sculpts. ZBrush had started crashing until I realized it was a memory issue which I fixed, but I was a little too spooked to try them again. But you're right. About the last week I started paying more attention to silhouettes and form, especially with the suit of armor guy. The outline shader was a big help. Another thing I didn't figure out until it was all done was the remesh, reproject process for adding geometry and fixing streaking polys. I suppose its a little redundant now with Dynamesh, but looking back over the last month I really could have used it. The adding/subtracting thing comes with practice I guess.
Its funny. I started a long term project last night and it felt weird not finishing something in one day. I might just have to put more time in and do both maybe.
One day, or even one our projects are good practice. But doing a long term project lets you think more about the process, as well as lets you think about detail, form and the end product as a whole. Plus in the end you will come up with something you can be proud of. A project I'm working on right now for school has be going on 5 weeks of work.
First real sketch with R2. So sweet. Insert Mesh, Dynamesh... scary freedom.
Another night of figure drawing/sculpting. Two 20 minute poses and one 25 minute pose. It was interesting seeing the difference with dynamesh. The only downside was hands merging into legs a little, but I'm sure there's a way to fix it. These speed sculpts might be a worthless exercise. Just not enough time. Although, part of me is thinking about planes of anatomy. Instead of softening everything into mushy muscle shapes, maybe next time use the planar, flatten and polish brushes for more defined edges... Oh well. Looks like I'll try it again next week.

Another shot at live sculpting. One fifteen minute and three twenties. I really need to sit down and figure this one out. The new features of R2 with insertmesh and quadpolycurve have to be able to fascilitate something like speed sculpting.
Really excited to start a new month of dailies focused on anatomy.

Tried to get my new years resolution of another sculpt a day going, but I'm a little behind schedule. So far just these three. I'm addicted to light cap, although its a little buggy at times. I love good studio lighting and its just so quick and convenient. I've also started to get a handle on dynamesh. its funny how different tools can totally change your workflow.
My favorite of these is definitely the axe monster. I finally got the hang of working with subtools and everything that goes with it, remeshing, extracting and everything else. Still a lot to learn and work on, but I'm feeling pretty good about 2012.
Woke up the next day and wished I'd made the eye sockets bigger, and aligned the lower jaw better. BUT! I did learn a lot about BPR and material settings.![]()
ia cthulhu
just a real quick edit

Thanks Pabgo.
Last night's efforts. I'll admit to being a little intimidated by cloth. I didn't intend to spend 3 hours on this, but I got sucked into it.![]()
