Nope, just painted on the render, and smudged...
See the 'Princess' thread Kokoro started for the technique. In basic terms it involves using the model as a basis for a painting, so the lit model provides you the light and shadow, and saves you a lot of blocking in.
Why model what you can paint?
Either way, you end up with 2D...
