It looks as though importing materials or making your own custom materials is a bad idea other than as a quick preview UNLESS you actually instal them into the \ZStartup\Materials directory.
What I think I have been seeing with just importing them is that they displace one of the existing materials and replace it, like if I have red wax selected when I do the import I lose red wax and all of the places where it was are replaced with the import.
I do not think that this is the source of either of our problems but is something that adds to them and makes them more complicated....
So, putting your custom materials into \ZStartup\Materials could make life easier.
One last thing on that, I do not use lightbox so I dont know if that does the same thing or not in terms of importing vs installing materials, I should check that out...
not sure if you ever got around your materials issue, but if you haven't...
The materials palette is just a bunch of slots, which is why when you bring in a custom one it replaces the material that was in that slot. It works this way for matcaps or standard materials, doesn't matter. You can go around this by using the zstartup folder like you have been doing, but I can only assume that the more things you stuff in there the more memory you are using.
You can instead go to your ZData\Materials and add/remove what you want, i.e. if you hate the red wax, just take it out and put it in the ZMaterials so you don't lose it. This of course works in reverse as well, if you lose a default matcap/material while working, they will be in the ZData\Materials folder.

Hope that helps, love all the abstracts you come up with. Have you tried playing with Best Render instead of BPR for your 2.5d work?

    Hehehehe!
the names are the only way I can remember them, I have a bunch that look like peach soap, and naming them peachsoap1 and peachsoap2 and so on isint helpful, some of them are called stuff like that but the ones I like the best get better names and bothering to rename something means you should have some fun with it right?
    GRIN!
Thankyou Crazy Horse, I hope you enjoy them, Im making more of them too.

    Estoy de acuerdo:
Asumir riesgos y hacer cosas nuevas es bueno. Pero no siempre es fácil.
Im muy contento te gustan los Matcaps.

I did sort of figure that out, but Its still problematic trying to use custom maatcaps and meterials and not having the menu take forever to draw. Most of that comment I made though was trying to answer a few questions someone had and I got a bit sidetracked and started thinking out loud.
I try not to delete things as I am constantly finding that Pixologic does that for me before I learned what it was and how to use it, a good example of that would be the brush menu (where I am now constantly replacing all the meshmixer ones like the heads and nose and ear with custom ones of my own).
The Materiel pallet has provided me with endless hours of fun and confusion and it seems that each one is different and can be messed with in various ways, the only problem I have now is that it takes a long time to open and when I am making a new matcap I often make an object at the same time and when I try to open it later I have to reconstruct all the steps I took to get it the way I had it, this can be rather entertaining.

As far as the Best Render thing goes I think I use it more than most people with the possible exception of Francisco Mai and ChalkMan who do a LOT of 2.5D stuff (and very very cool 2.5D stuff at that).
2.5D and Best render are beginning to suffer from neglect I think as some of the stuff they used to be able to do is not working well or at all anymore like making symmetry using layers for example. I hope that this gets a look soon as 2.5D is one of the more amazing and I think under used things ever developed in computer graphics.
Thank you very much for the comment about the abstract stuff, its amazing how much fun that stuff is.
I suppose I should point out that I'm not trying to do abstract art I'm just having a lot of fun making things that make my own eyes happy and learning how to make things at the same time.
If you look at a lot of the 2.5D stuff I have here you will find that it is often a repeating texture, something that I never dreamed I could do until I got ZBrush, its amazing.

    Cheers you guys and thanks!

I'm getting a bit of a kick out of making MatCaps and have learned a few things about them in the process.
    So....
    Here is some more!

This time I will do the images first then the files, I think it will work better for some reason.

    Great new Matcaps!
I have tried doing some matcaps once or twice but failed, just can't get good results.

hummm... I'm curious about the nameless one... is he the same one I'm thinking of or am I just still high from yesterday?

PS. again, just love the names on those matcaps

    Peace

    Hello Mealea...

I feel that I've upset you, so sorry to have kept you waiting - I know it has been a while, but unfortunately it was/is due to circumstances beyond my control.

MatCaps will be given to Pixologic next week, I have posted something on my thread

    Cheers

    John
