Hi Dmitrij,
Have you got ZBrush 4 yet, I haven't, if you have why not use this exercise as a test, use the newer features and repost... hereby we'll all be able to see the improvements of ZB4 on different platforms...
Just and idea...

Hello Ziggy
It's a great idea (I've already rendered it in Z4, not very happy though, you can see it in my thread, second to last page now). The thing is that this challenge is going on other 3d forums, and Z4 wasn't available at the time, and that was purposefully to fill in the gap before the siggraph goodies start preoccupying everyone, I think it worked out very well. But definitely would share the ztool if there would be people interested so we all find out more about the possibilities of bpr. Perhaps another ztool though not to get bored with the same one :D And it doesn't have to be mine either.
Best wishes
D
Announcement
Please put down your name/nickname and the software(s) used for rendering and compositing along with your final submissions. Thank you all!
Too bad I didn't notice this thread earlier ... It would be fun for sure
Crap! I forgot about this. I wanted to try out some render techniques but i just started tonight. I only had a couple hours tonight to put this together but i wanted to give it a go. The skins not the best but here's what i have so far. Fun model to work with, wish i would have started sooner. Thanks for the assets!
Oh, single pass render out of maya using mental ray. No compositing on this one . Added a background layer in photoshop.

:( Photoshop's assigning some weird color profiles so i'm not getting the correct levels im seeing in photoshop. Here's a slighly different balance. Sorry for taking up so much space!
walkin down the street, pretty woman, the kind I like to meet, pretty woman, I don't believe you! it must be true, no one can look as good as you, MERCY!
Good job on Nanny Ogg!
Thank you sooo much to everyone who participated! :) I'm so glad an you all did a great job as far as I'm concerned! I'll be forwarding the entries to the jury now, and let you know of the final result as soon as available! (hopefully within the next few days)
See ya!
Hey! We've got the winners announced! Some members of our jury were so kind to right down a couple of lines for every entry (as there were only very few). I've translated them from Croatian, so if they come out a bit harsh it's me, cause they're really sweet :) A big thank you to everyone who participated and a thank you to the jury!
Toni Bratin***269;evi***263; from Blur studios
Dejan Kober from DD3D
Anto Jur***269;i***263; from Prime Time Sarajevo
and Brajan Martinovi***263;
P.S. Sorry it took so long to coordinate every jury member, mea culpa.
Dmitrij
Here's how the jury voted
Brajan - Alen, Griml0ck, nwargasm, Dudin (sorry Ziggy seems he didn't see your work :()
Anto - Griml0ck, Alen, nwargasm, Sigmund Hentze, Dudin
Dejan - Griml0ck, Alen, nwargasm, Sigmund Hentze, Dudin
Toni - Nwargasm, Alen, Griml0ck, Sigmund Hentze, Dudin
1st place: Griml0ck (Maya Vray)
Prize: authorization to do whatever with her :)
Dejan Kober:
„Plus:
Of all submissions this one has the materials worked out best, which seem the most natural of all final submissions. Skin material is relatively good, so are the cloth and pearls materials. The smoke coming out from the pipe is also nicely done, and isn't contradicting the scene as a whole.
Minus:
I'd like if the character was placed in a more interesting scene.“
Brajan Martinovi***263;:
„Next to Alen's entry, I like this one the most. I don't fancy the daylight, but you can clearly see the quality of the model. Missing postwork, at least a bit of curves in photoshop. Certanly some contrast if it's daylight. The skin shader is pretty good. It would've been cool if the author added some kind of a specular map around the muzzle so the hag would look drooled LOL.“
Toni Bratin***269;evi***263;:
Interesting work, really differentiates completely form the other entries with a different lighting style. Very good smoke, hardly noticable but enough to round the picture. The only work where the hair is prominent. Also good reflection on the skin. Although I like it, a darker atmosphere better suits this model imo.
2nd place: Alen (XSI)
Dejan Kober:
„Plus:
Of all submitted entries this one has the most appropriate feel; the character is placed in a appropriate scene, with the lighting suiting the subject of the competition.
Minus:
The picture is too noisy and blurry, hence lacking the details and quality, especially of the skin material, that is the face and the pipe which seems added subsequently. Smoke coming out from the pipe is too light considering the rest of the scene, and seems like it also was added subsequently in the postprocess (which it is, but could be done better)
Brajan Martinovi***263;:
„All looks great, no crits. Perhaps the pipe could be better shadowed, as it looks a bit flat, as though lighting isnt' affecting it. I'm not sure whether the authout moved the eyes of the hag or is it just the camera angle, but she looks more alive than on other pictures – gazing at something giving you the sense it's not going to be good :) And the shader is good, also meaning a lot is the little yellowish highlight on her left eye (her side). Great work and great model.“
Toni Bratin***269;evi***263;:
„The lighting is good although it could do with some more work. One better positioned rim light on the left side would give an interesting read of the character's contour. I like it how at the first glance focus goes to the face which is the strongest part of this model. A good touch with the smoke, even though I feel it should be a bit darker, because it's light dominates over the rest of the picture. All in all a very fine work.
3rd place: Nwargasm (Maya mental ray)
Dejan Kober:
„Plus:
The darker ambient with a combination of the details and textures gives a relatively alive and convincing result on some parts of the image.
Minus:
Unfortunately, the specular protrusion on parts where there should not be any, and the lack of an environment or a scene in which the character would be placed considerably deprive the overall effect of this piece. Materials of the pearls and the lace should also be fixed, cause they look unfinished as they are.
Second entry: All said for the first one, only that it being lighter and warmer leaves a some what poorer effect than the first one.
Brajan Martinovi***263;:
„Both entries...One light I presume? The material has some kind of fresnel on it, which nicely accentuates the edges, wrinkles and stuff. But it's too strong on the skin, so I generally don't get the feeling she's alive, but made out of plastic.“
Toni Bratin***269;evi***263;:
Good shader on the clothes...I like the falloff on the lighter colour near the edges. The face is very good lit...tiny speculars on the eyes give an extra level of life to the character. Amongst all entries this one has the most emotion put into the character. Simply watching that face I get a sense of wisdom and sorrow. Very good. A bit of work on the background wouldn't do any harm ;)“
4th place: Sigmund Hentze (Modo)
Dejan Kober:
„Plus:
Relatively good skin, pearls and cloth materials, with a relatively good incorporation of the pipe smoke. Good choice for composition, which give the picture some character.
Minus:
The most obvious minus (and the biggest) is the choice for a lower quality texture and (I assume) usage of bump mapping instead of normal mapping, and too strongly, which is why the the material on the face consideraby looses quality and convincingness.
I'd like if the author chose another, less intense colour for the background, because the current green takes the foucs to the upper left corner, but also in a negative sense because it doesn't fit the scene and leaves a rather sharp and unnatural specular on the hat.
Although a minor thing, but contributing to the others as well, is the obvious transition of the inset smoke over the pipe rim.
Toni Bratin***269;evi***263;:
„A reposition of light would very much help this work. If it were positioned more to the right the composition would gain a new depth to it. Right now I'm feeling it's coming almost frontally...which is ok if the artist wanted to make a picture as if taken with a camera+blitz. Skin reflection should be a bit more worked out as well as the subsurface shaders. Bump is over done, and looks like it's low res. The composition here is the best of all the entries.
5th place: Dudin (cinema 4d)
Dejan Kober:
„Plus:
The author has tried to create an appropriate feel, and has relatively succeeded.
Minus:
The lack of details on the face, poor skin material seems more like stone than skin. The lighting could do with more liveliness and variety. The smoke coming out of the pipe is unnatural and „artificial“. Would be better without it.
Brajan Martinovi***263;:
„I'm not sure where have all the wrinkles and the bump gone? Looks like the author made an effort for the hag to get to the cover of Cosmo :) It's all very smooth. And the shadow of the hat blackens a big portion making it dull. Certainly no more than one light source here, incomplete materials, boring background, bad smoke, better there weren't any.
Toni Bratin***269;evi***263;:
„First thing I notice is that this entry is missing GI, which would come in handy to fill in the overly dark parts. The position of light is very interesting because it covers the right eye which shines in the dark a little...a sense of split personality :) The background could definitely be a bit more interesting, although not in focus still plays a big part in the overall look. Noticable lack of sss and specular on the skin.
Closing word from Brajan:
„Hmmm, a sad turnout. A lot of people on vacation this time of year, probably why. This competition presented a good example how it's not enough to turn on mental ray and global illumination and expect it'll do all the job for you. Sluggards :)
Thanks for the win :) I completely agree with the crits that was given so good work there! I thought it was a fun competition, so please do more of them. Let me know if you need any help with exporting the maps for next time.
Best wishes,
Johan
Congratulations Griml0ck! I myself was most pleased what you did with it as well. As you know I'm not big on rendering, and I don't know even how to bake some maps out (such as spec for example), moreso how to use them the right way... Hope it'll change though as soon as I'm pretty satisfied with my sculpting skills I'll give myself to the rendering tutorials.
Once again, thanks for your help, I might take you up on that in the future ;) And congratulations! P.S. if you'd like I'll send you the ztool.
