Hello Community
The ever growing first thread of DID YOU KNOW THAT (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=61676) has really been a great inspiration for me to keep creating the tutorials. It is so great to see people learning something from the videos.
With the newest version of ZBRUSH 4 I felt it would be great to create a thread of DID YOU KNOW THAT (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/showthread.php?t=61676) all wrapped around ZBRUSH 4.
ZBrush has always allowed me as an artist to experiment freely. I often discover new tricks or approaches that improve my workflow and help me achieve my goal of creating better artwork. All while having fun.
This thread will consist of simple tips and tricks that I'd like to share and hopefully give you new ideas to create a workflow within ZBrush 4.
I encourage any member to ask the question, "I want to do this, how can I?"
Please keep this thread as a place artists can come to get workflow ideas for their WIPs. Thank you.
Enjoy ZBrushing

Hello Community
In this video I will walk through a new feature found in ZBrush 4. The new Visibility capability to grow and shrink your selection inside ZBrush will most definitely speed your workflow up . The new sub-palette is found in the Tool Palette at Tool>Visibility.
With this new feature it is extremely easy to split up a tool into multiple subtools. In the video I will demo how to take a mesh that has several mesh shells with one polygroup and convert that mesh into multiple subtools by converting the multiple shells into multiple polygroups so that I may GroupSplit them into Subtools.
In the video you will also see how easy it is to select parts of a mesh now with a few keys strokes.
This is the YouTube Video:

Here is the Veoh video:

This will most definitely help your workflow. Now that this feature is inside ZBrush I find myself working faster then ever before.

Hello Community
The rigging tools with in ZBrush are an extremely useful tool that will not only allow you to pose a character but you can also use the rig to make large changes to any mesh.
This video is Part 1 of a multiple part video section on Rigging in ZBrush. This video will walk you through how to create a rig in ZBrush quickly, efficiently, and as easy as it can get. Part 1 will start with rigging a single Subtool with other videos to follow on rigging with multiple Subtools, using layers and using the Timeline feature.
This video also demonstrates how you can capture the highest level of detail from the sculpt onto the rigged version of the sculpt.
These will be an exciting serious of videos that I know will open up your imagination on how to rig with ZBrush.

Hello Community
This video is Part 2/4 for ZSphere Rigging with ZBrush. In this video I continue on the journey of ZBrush rigging for the purpose of posing a character. In Part 1 I discussed how to pose with a single Subtool, now learn to rig with multiple subtools.
In this video I will walk you through using Transpose Master's newest feature to Rig a multiple Subtool Character with a ZSphere.
After watching Part 1 (http://showpost.php/?p=762020&postcount=245) and Part 2 you will be able to rig any character that has a single Subool or multiple Subtools. I encourage you to play around with Rigging as much as possible. It is one POWERFUL tool!!!!
Make sure to download the newest Transpose Master here:
www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins)
To install Transpose Master
Download the Windows or MAC version to your computer
Unzip the File
You will find a folder named TransposeMaster.
With in this folder you will find another folder named TPoseMasterData4 and a script file called TransposeMaster_4_06.zsc.
Install this folder and script file into the following directory:
ZBrush4/zstartup/zplugs
Then restart ZBrush. Plug-ins will only work at launch so if you have ZBrush open already you will need to shut it down for the plug-in Transpose Master to be installed.
You will find Transpose Master in the ZPlugs Palette at the top of ZBrush's interface once installed.
Many thanks for taking a look at the video.

Hello Community
Here is a video I did in ZBrush 3.1 with Transpose Master but it is still very relative to ZBrush 4. When you topological mask in Transpose Master all subtools that will be automatically masked except for the Subtool you are masking.
This video will show you a trick using TRANSPOSE MASTER to move masked off subtools so that you can strike a pose.

You will also need the plug-in TRANSPOSE MASTER for this video. HERE (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/) is the link to download.
Please keep in mind that this video was shot in ZBrush 3.1 so Transpose Master will look a little bit different now in ZBrush 4.
Thank you for visiting.

Hello Community
This was originally shot in ZBrush 3.1 so there will be some interface differences but the video is still very relevant.
This is a feature in ZBrush that I think many people do not know about or how it works but it could save some headaches for some of you. When you are using the pinch brush have you ever wanted to add more detail but you couldn't because all of your polys have been pinched together? Well duh thats what the brush is suppose to do.
However, this video will show you how to reconstruct your polys quickly so you can add more detail around the pinch.
The tool is found in the Tool Palette under Geometry and is called
Reproject Higher Subdiv

Hello Community
This was originally shot in ZBrush 3.1 so there will be some interface differences but the video is still very relevant.
This video will show you quick ways to edit any topology.
Example, if you just want to add more edge loops or add more topology on a certain part of your tool without having to redo all of the topology. This may solve some issues for people when they just want to add polys on one part of their tool.
This video is two parts. This first part is another approach to the top video but is a much faster way. The second half of the video shows how you can use the topology tools to combine multiple tools

This is another video that was shot in ZBrush 3.1 but I think the information is relative for ZBrush 4. This is a neat trick that could save you at some point.
Many things have changed for menus in this video. When I am speaking about UVs the buttons are now located in the UV Map and Texture Map sub-palette in the Tool Palette. (UV Check is now in the Texture Map Sub-Palette).
This video will show you know to add polys to sections of a tool when you need to get more detail without subdividing the whole tool. Masking is used to select the region you want divided. Project all and ZProject Brush is also used to fix UV issue. This trick may help you when you need just a few more polys in one spot to get some detail.
Keep in mind this will add some triangles to your mesh.

Hello Community
This video was shot in ZBrush 3.1 as well but it is still great to see how the 3D Primitives in ZBrush can create some great custom shapes.
This video will demonstrate using the primitive 3D Circle to make a complex clamp for a Roman Empire's cape. I also hope this video will encourage you to take a look at the primitives in an initial state. Think about how a cube or sphere can possibly give you a really quick base mesh. Enjoy :D

Hello ZBrush Community
This is another video that was shot in ZBrush 3.1. Please remember that some of the menus could of changed but for the most part this is still all the same.
NOTE:
When I speak of moving around your interface buttons by holding CTRL when in Customize UI mode, this has changed to CTRL+ALT for ZBRUSH 4.
Here is a video on creating your own custom menu in ZBrush. This is a great asset for you to create a really quick workflow for yourself. This video will also show you how this menu can be used as your own right click menu. Enjoy. :)

I have a question regarding your video named
Local Subdividing for Detail
when we get the detail from 'bad UV' one back onto our original model via projection(or by any means) we don't have extra geometry there, right. Now if I dont get extra geometry via projection in that particlar region why do I need to do this whole process. If geometry was already enough to accomodoate this projected detail then why do I need extra geometry at first place to acheive that detail. I am a bit confused about what we got here.
Its a great thread and best wishes..

Yes you make a good point. When I made that video I was trying to show off multiple features. Now I would just use the UV Master to fix the UVs. That would be a whole lot faster. Great thought and thank you so much for taking the time to watch the videos and leave some feedback.
I am always looking for ideas and ways to improve the videos for the community.

Thank you so much for visiting the thread. I am currently putting the finishing touches on Part 3 of Rigging with ZBrush. It will be up soon.
cmoffitt -- thank Chris!
bicc39 -- I am all ears for anything you guys would like to see. :) Next is Part 3 & 4 of Rigging and then some videos on tricks and specific brushes.
misha_dd -- Thank you. Great idea. Next video I will try launching the virtual keyboard on the MAC.
ced66 -- Let me double check this one Cedric. :) Thank you.
Gordon Robb -- Tough, but here is one thought. Lets say you have a cylinder that is now twisted. I want to make the faces right before the caps their own Polygroup. I could use the outer ring after I have grown my selection to this point. Thank you for raising more questions. Keep them coming.
I thank everyone for opening more questions. This is what I was hoping for as well. This will give me more ideas for videos. :)
Happy New Year.

As for brushes being added into Lightbox. What brushes are you saying can not be added?
To add a brush to Lightbox, just go to your root folder of ZBrush, save the brush in the folder called Zbrushes.

Hi Paul
I am trying to follow along with the ZBrush Reproject Higher Subdivision Level video. I have drawn out a 3d Sphere and convert it by clicking the Make Polymesh3D button. After I divide it into 4 levels I then use the pinch and standard brushes as you show to deform my mesh. I then drop down two levels and Smooth brush but the button I have on MAC (the one I thing your using) I don't have on Mac ZBrush 4. Is this an update?

The eye brush is just a document grab of a sculpt of a eye. You can do the same approach with a nose and ear but you will not have the same result. There is a lot of undercutting for a nose and ear. The only way to make this happen quickly is with vector displacement maps. However, what you could do is sculpt out a ear and nose that you will also use, then use those meshes with the Insert Mesh.
This link will help you a bit with the two Insert Meshes
http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Mesh_Insert_Brush
Small note for you. The eye brush is still in ZBrush 4 but it has been placed in the Brush folder found in Lightbox.

You can move each Subtool slot out but the issue here will be each Tool will have several different Subtools. There is no way to guess how many slots you would need to move into a custom menu.
However, what you can do is use Timeline to create a custom hide and showing of Subtools. Do you know how to do that?

Hello Community
Before watching this Part 3 rigging video it would be best to watch
Part 2: Rigging with Transpose Master. This video will start at the middle point of Part 2 rigging.
However, this video will demonstrate how you can pose multiple poses with ZBrush rigging system, then with just a click of the button those poses will be added to a layer. We will be using a saved Project from Transpose Master in this video and visiting what the Layer button in Transpose Master can do for you.
In this video we will be using Transpose Master so be sure to visit http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/ (http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/to) to download the plug-in before starting.

If you are going to use Transpose Master to build the rig there is no way at this time to import the all ready built rig. However, if you are not going to use Transpose Master then you can save out one rig and use it on any character.
Just do the following:
Create a rig
Save that rig as a Tool
Next session just load that Tool
Go To the Rigging Sub-Palette
Click on select mesh and load what ever mesh you want
That will help a little.

Thanks Paul,
The problem is that most times I will need to use Transpose Master, because even if the character is nude, I will need to move the body and the eyes, so that's more than one subtool.
Anyway, it looks like it's very fast to create those rigs, so it's not a big problem.

Hi Paul,
Most times I use it on characters with clothes, but even on a nude character, I always have the eyes on a separate subtool, so if I want them to move with the head I need to use Transpose Master. Or am I missing something?

No for that Transpose Master is the best unless you use Contacts after you have already moved the body or could merge everything and then use Split Polygroup when done with the pose.

Bloody Brilliant Thread Paul!
Nothing helps one learn any software, especially graphical stuff, like videos. And the best videos are the narrated kind made by an expert - as opposed to 200mph time lapses with a def metal soundtracks too quick to have any idea HOW the tutor is doing his job. There's nothing more frustrating than spending half an hour rewinding, playing, pausing, and playing again trying to figure out which button he hit to make the thing do that!
Your videos are just the ticket Paul, one can follow what you're doing without feeling like a knucklehead!
I'll be back for mo'!
Hi Paul and many thanks for these great tutorials! I have a question about Transpose Master rigging (using ZB4 on mac). In your video you just click on different parts of the canvas to add Zspheres when building the rig - i can't do that?! When I click on the canvas I just rotate my model, so I need to click and drag on a Zsphere to create a new one, move it and so on... Can't make it work as easy as it lookes in your video. Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks!
// tennet
Hi tennet, I think I saw an answer to this in this thread but cant find it. But if I remember correctly you have to select the ZSphere that you want to be the first in the new chain and in draw/edit mode click on the screen.
Hope that helps.
Thanks Point! Found the answer in post#45. I had the Ghost transparency ON - it should be off... :)

I followed the first tutorial on posing a mesh using a zsphere rig. I've tried this a couple times and keep getting similar results where it seems like part of the mesh doesn't bind perhaps? I move the armature and some polys don't move with the rest. It seems to be asymmetrical as well, affecting only one side but not consistently the same side. So this image shows the left foot deforming and on the same mesh the right hand goes wonky.
I'm just using the super average man tool as the mesh so that I could practice.

Best regards,
Rob

Hello Rob
This is difficult to narrow down. Can you do a recording of yourself putting together your rig and moving it in ZBrush? You can do this by going to the Movie Palette in ZBrush and clicking on Record.
Once you are done with your rigging and moving go back to the Movie Palette and click on Export. Can you please make a .MOV file and zip that up and send it to me.
In the meantime, make sure to have x-symmetry on when building your rig.
Are you using Rotate or Move when adjusting the rig once it has been binded?

Hello Community
I had a good friend and an amazing artist Joseph Drust put together a video on how to GoZ your displacement, normal, and texture maps out of ZBrush into 3DSMAX for rendering. I am not a 3DSMAX user but if there are any questions about the video please continue to post them in this thread.
This post is only hosting Part 2 of ZBrush 4 GoZ to 3DSMAX for Rendering
Part 1 can be found in ZClassroom on Pixologic's site. In Part 1 Joseph will walk you through setting up your model in ZBrush for GoZ into 3DSMAX.

I hate to say this but the download for the Veoh player contains malware or spyware of some sort...
I have tried to get it a couple of times and had the same result each time.

Amazing work you're doing here gabo1991, thanks for sharing these videos. It really helps the community and therefore also pixologic...
I do have a question, and though you're not a 3dsmax user, you sure know somebody who has already dealt with this problem: rendering a mesh with Vraydisplacementmod.
After reading tons of posts about settings (amount = x and shift = -x /2 doesn't always work), 2D displacements, 3D displacements, etc...
32bit maps are supposed to have the displacement amount embedded, right? I got my displacements to work perfectly with mental ray, but not with Vray, as they always show seams or not a pixel perfect displacement.
And as me, many other 3dsmax users would also be thankful with this help...
once again thanks for the effort!

It was in the attempt to download the Veoh player that I was informed of this, and with a few different things, Windows defender and then SpybotS&D...
The player allows you (I think) to download and watch these videos offline, something that would be nice however it set off my detection programs so I dident end up getting it.
No specific video, just the player from the Veoh website.
If you like I can look it up again and supply you with a direct link.

Paul- Thank you so much for the awesome and very helpful videos. I especially like that you have included download links so I was able to watch many of them while away from any internet connection.
I don't think this has been mentioned here (and I don't know if it is limited to ZB4 or not), but I've seen this to be new knowledge to a few people so it might be worth sharing. Zbrush isn't always limited to polypaint/vertex colors when texturing, and having a texture can also make UV Morph more handy.

Cryrid: Yeah ive known about using PM with Zapplink since the beginning. I think thats how it was initially used before polypaint became so prevalent.
Ive asked this question in the Questions forum but sill no answer.
Say i have a character with a blank 4k or even 8k map. What is the recommended size of the document when working with zapplink in projection master.
Because im sure the document size comes into play since when in PS if its way to small then when you are scaling down your projections the detail will be lost if the size of the document (in PS) doesn't have enough pixels.
Is there a concrete rule? If not is there some sort of guideline i could follow?

Great videotutorials and very helpful!
Warning: the next things to come, come from a newb who's completley new to everything considering 3d modelling:
I decided to mess around some for the first time with Zbrush and decided on trying to get some sculpted fish exported to cinema4d. However I encountered some problems and now I'm fairly to extremely stuck....
I sculpted a fish (and maybe quite recklesslessly I subdivided and subdivided the mesh). Then I textured it using Spotlight and Polypaint.
Here comes the rub: I only really know how to export the OBJ and haven't really found how to export the textures. I figured I might have to use the UV master to make a UV map with the texture embedded in there (correct me if I'm completely wrong!)....
The problem there is I don't really know if I'm just getting the lighting and 3d information to create some template without the texture. Other than that when creating a cloned object it doesn't return to it's most basic polygon level but the fish remains having the ridiculous amount of polygons; when unwrapping my programme crashes. I tried to reduce the number of polygons thorugh geometry, however there's nothing that's selectable in that section... I can't subdivide or undivide, not increase and not decrease polygons. (My fish is in editing mode though).
Only if I make a polymesh3d (again? I don't understand) I can reduce the polygons...but then my texture gets lost.
What bothers me aswell is even though I have a ZTL of my fish and an OBJ; in Zbrush it's textured. I can't seem to find any reference to some kind of texture in my tool palette....
If the above just seems like odd non understandable rambling without an end my issue is this: I don't know how to export both my fish and my texture to cinema4d. Everything I tried didn't work and I encountered a lot of problems.
Last but not least: the difference between texturing, polypainting and UV mapping fairly confuses me and I think that's the origin of my complete journey of flaws and failure towards creating my fish of doom.
There's a setting under "Preferences/Misc" called "Use ZFolder" that is on by default. This is why Zbrush does not remember the last folder you have been in. One click and no more random folder browsing :)

i am just starting with zbrush and have two quick questions:
1) When appending subtools lets say a sphere for an eyeball, is there a way to get that appended
sphere mirrored so I only have to place one eyball and the other one moves in the exact place on the other side?
2) I remember having seen screenshots or videos where the artist had a selection of their favourite brushes in a custom palette at the bottom of the UI for quick access. I'd like that too and i managed to create a menu containing my most used brushes, but I dont know how to dock this at the bottom. I can only move it in the tray to the left or right.

1) If your head is right in the center and is symmetrical place the first eyeball into its (Use the right not left) socket and when you have it in the right place and the right size hit the "Mirror and Weld" button in the Subtool pallet. If you run into trouble look at the little X,Y and Z icons in the Mirror and Weld button, your model may be oriented differently.
2) In theory if you have created a menu you should be able to drag it anywhere you like, I'm not good at this but if that does not work look in this thread and watch the movie:

New to zBrush but experienced with Max and Rhino. I would like learn zBrush better by modeling from model sheets with so many online to pick from. For example : http://animationarchive.net/Model%20Sheets/
I have been building the basic form and then trying to use Spotlight to do the rest. I just dont have the ability to look at a sheet and then do it freehand and am used to being able to use image planes for reference.
What is the best flow, style, method, tools or any suggestions on how to go about doing this correctly without ending up with a mess of misaligned features.

you can use the Mirror function in SubTool Master to do this. In fact the great part about this is if you have an eye with subdivision levels this will be kept on the other eye.

Hello
The best plug-in to use for what you want is the ImagePlane. You can store different views with multiple different views. You can find the plug-in under the Texture Palette. However, there was an issue with the original version that came with the install of ZBrush4R2. You will need to download the new one at the http://www.pixologic.com/zbrush/downloadcenter/zplugins/.
Make sure to delete the old ImagePlane plug-in from the ZBrush4R2/ZStartUp/Zplugs before installing the two new files from the download.
Once this is installed there is a great Help button for this plug-in. If this does not work let me know and maybe I can find a video for you.

Are you trying to make right click the short-cut to the custom menu you are making? You can't do that in ZBrush since that is hotkey to the quick menu and the right-click navigation.
Is this what you are trying to do?

I assigned my own hotkey to the menu that I made. To do that you need to exit Custom UI once your done creating the custom menu. Then hold Ctrl+Alt and click on the custom menu you made. You will now be able to assign any hotkey to pull up your custom menu.
Hope this helped.

Hey Jake
Ya you can do something like that. Change the picker orientation. Click right in the middle of the icon that looks like an arrow. here is a picture of it what I did. The big orange box. This will tell ZBrush to use the camera orientation for drawing out the Insert brushes. Since I am keeping the arrow looking straight ahead ZBrush will always draw out the shape along that same axis. Of course you can move this arrow in any direction so you can have shapes drawn out along any axis.
Let me know if this helps.

Not sure if there's an easier way, nut I'd use the slice brush (whatever it's called), make shure close groups is ticked in DynaMesh bit, the remesh and your mesh will be two bits. Duplicate the subtool. The in one, make one part visible, the 'delete hidden' in the duplicate tool make the other part visible, and 'delete hidden'. Done.

Thanks Gordon, works like a charm. Also "split groups" makes the subtool creation from the groups even faster.

Hey Jake
You can use the SliceBrush to cut the mesh up. Turn on the Group button in the DynaMesh section. Then re-DynaMesh. This will create two pieces with two polygroups. Now all you have to do is click GroupSplit in the SubTool sub-palette.

If you are trying to move the whole thing it is a subtool, so you would go into the subtool pallet and select your new object, then use the transpose tools or the deformation pallet to to move them around.
If you are only trying to move bits of it you would use the Groom Brushes, but it sounds to me like you want to move the whole thing, right?
Cheers!

THAT is weird, I just tried it and have the result you have with the transpose tools but Offset in the deformation pallet worked fine (and did not crash so far).
So it looks like the transpose tool is doing things differently, or in this case wrong(?)
Ok (a moment later)
I see what its doing, use the deformation pallet to move the whole thing.
Use the transpose tools for some fairly serious grooming.
Try using the rotate and scale transpose tools as well and you will see what I mean, its neat you can make big curls and stuff.
EDIT: Using the transpose tools like this it seems good to use lots of segments, otherwise things seem to break sort of.
This is Move and Rotate:
297609
And with all three; Move, Scale and Rotate:
297612
Hmmmm but offset wont helpv in say posing a character with hair...it would be impossible to get it exact Ithere should be a way to unlock it i cant believe this isnt in the tutorial....anyway thanks for the help :D

The root is automasked so that the fibers stay in position when grooming them. If you want to move them away from the root you need to turn off the auto masking feature in Brush>Auto Masking>Auto Mask Fibers. I would recommend keep this on unless you want to completely move the fibers away.
